From vinyl records to instant online streaming, the advancements in technology have been truly impressive. Long gone are the days of standing in line at the music store, or lugging around heavy electronic equipment (Ramey, "Modern Technology Advantages And Disadvantages"). Since the negative impact that Napster had on the music industry, the music industry has started to grow again. The number of sales has increased while piracy has gone down. A report by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry showed that global sales of recorded music increased for the first time since 1999 by 0.3% in 2012. Digital sales played a major role in this increase as this sector grew by 9%. This sector includes iTunes and music streaming services such as Spotify.…
Music and society have a large impact on each other, and how they shape the way people view and act in the world. There are four themes that identify and characterize how music has evolved over the past one hundred years. These themes also show how music affects and expresses the culture that not only we live in today, but also how we have changed in our views on numerous aspects of today’s society. The four themes that are explored directly with a specific artist and, or, band are how they impact society, politics, and several cultural issues that have stood the test of time and the way race, class, and gender are expressed in music. The development of the music industry and the technology used in it are widely affected by the change in music over decades, but also by outstanding individuals during their careers, which span over a variable amount of time.…
Within the past few years, music streaming sites like Pandora, Spotify, and iHeartRadio began to make their way into the digital world. One thing all these applications have in common is that they are free and convenient, a lot like file sharing. Some have argued that since the rise of these sites, piracy is beginning to become obsolete. In “Streaming Reaches Flood Stage: Does Spotify Stimulate or Depress Music Sales?”, the authors state how Spotify has changed the effect of illegal downloading altogether and that every forty-seven streams the file sharing rate goes down by one (Aguiar, Waldfogel, 2015). While this does help the artist in a way Spotify is stingy with how they pay the artist through the streaming service.…

In “Music Piracy and Its Effects on Demand, Supply and Welfare”, Joel Waldfogel explains that with consumers constantly downloading music illegally on the internet since the 90s, lack of compensation has caused the recording industry to find a financial solution while still producing music. According to studies in Waldfogel’s article, technology weakens copyright protection for recorded music resulting in a revenue reduction and a decreased amount of music coming into the market for consumers. Waldfogel mentions that since online pirating sites, specifically Napster, have caused a decreased revenue all over the world, the supply of new music will decrease as the recording industry can’t compensate for it. As a result. it is hard for recording…

In the 21st century, technology has made music incredibly accessible. With the internet and smart phones, music can be found in various different and more convenient formats (mp3, Soundcloud, Pandora, Spotify, Youtube etc.). Musicians have the ability to evoke emotion, to bring strangers together through a common love of expression, to mold the opinions of youth, and even to start a movement. From Beethoven to the Beatles, artists and musical groups have had a measurable impact on society and the evolution of music, although not always immediately revered. Since 1993 when Lorin Ashton first began making electronic music as the main producer for the group Bassnectar, fans knew that he was creating something special and not easily definable. Just like the Beatles changed the way we think of rock and roll, Lorin continues to be one of the most influential players in shaping how electronic music is defined and viewed…

MTV changed everything when it first aired; Napster did the same two decades later; Apple continued the trend with the introduction of the iPod and iTunes. Artists need to keep up with the exponentially changing way that the public gets exposed to their music if they desire to continue being paid to practice their craft.…
Napster to me was something that opened up a new wave of free music. From what I remembered about Napster, it was one of the first sites where you could get free music. The first thing we notice is the word free and after seeing that word free people don’t care about anything else. Napster opened up so many doors in the music industry, but not all of it was bad. For example, underground artist became more popular because the music files sharing.…
