The prior rule of Constantine brought about the constructs of a New Rome and the usage of mosaics as a primary medium for church decoration. As we have seen before, emperors erected statues, monuments and various other symbols of themselves in order to solidify their rule over the people of their empire and prove their divine right to rule. Justinian’s rule started in 527 and this is where you will see him use the mosaics, the new found medium, to draw a connection between himself as emperor and the holiness of the saints the church. The image I want to talk about today is found inside the Church of San Vitale. It was dedicated by Bishop Maximianus in 547 in honor of Saint Vitalis, who was second century martyr. The image title is called Justinian, Bishop Maximianus, and attendants, mosaic on the north wall of the apse, San Vitale, Ravenna, Italy, ca. 547. What strikes me, as the view, as more important, is not where the image is located but how the image is depicted. I try to image that I am Justinian himself, directing the creation of this piece and what I come to find is something very obvious. It is very obvious to me that Justinian wanted to make sure that anyone looking at that image could tell that he was in fact the main focal point. Although everyone’s heads lay almost at the same height, it is not up that we should look, but rather down. The feet of Justinian are clearly placed both frontal and outward giving his body a forward stance. This can be seen with his shoulders as well, for they are both displayed, one not hidden behind another as is seen in every other character, except for one. That is the image of Maximianus, which is clearly labeled above him. If you simply ignore the fact that both Justinian and Maximianus are dressed elaborately and strip everyone of their clothes, you would still be able to see who is of most importance. Most noticeable, Justinian stands in the center of the mosaic but in a way you can tell that he is sharing his spot light with Maximianus. This portrayal gives the impression that Justinian is

The reliefs of the two spectacles all follow the path of the procession, in opposite directions. Norman makes comparison between the triumph and the apotheosis and finds similarities that bond them together, which makes the argument more convincing. In addition, Norman uses visual evidence of the Arch of Titus to demonstrate the connection between the triumph and the apotheosis. For example, Titus is dressed in the same tunic and toga in both the triumphal relief and the apotheosis panel.…

The juxtaposition of the small faces with broad shoulders communicate the incredible power commanded by each of these figures politically, physcially, and supernaturally. Similarly, the exaggerated length of the legs suggest their importance not only in terms of scale, as this makes them comparatively large within their background, but in terms of line; the strong vertical lines suggests little motion but rather the ability to stand anchored admist conflict. Finally, the size of King Mycerinus’ head dress is exaggerated in size, likely to place him above the other two figures since he is comparatively smaller in scale and depth than Hathor (though his torso is nearly as large as Hathor’s, which itself indicates a similarity in…

We are taught history in the hopes that we will be able to avoid the mistakes of past, however, it seems that history continues to repeat itself. However, it seems that history often finds a way to repeat itself, even during the present day. We have come a long way from the time of Pope Urban II but the problems we face are still similar in essence. Although the Crusades were fought over eight hundred years ago some of the same problems still exist today.…

The man sitting on the chair signifying a “higher” role is likely to be Marcus because he was the emperor. This means the other man is his brother Lucius. The men are looking up, towards a naked man which is symbolic. The naked man with the angel wings floating above them is most likely Antoninus because of the fact that it was built in honor of him right after he died. All the way at the top, we can see a man and a woman.…

Pope Gregory I, was the first monk to become pope of the catholic church between 590 and 604 AD. He was also the first pope who had the name of Gregory and the fourth doctor in the Latin Church. One of the many achievement he has made was to break the terror made by the Lombards who invaded Italy in 568. Even though Pope Gregory I accomplished many great things during his time, he was also “likely to be the first pope to send a mission to take the gospel to ends of the world” (Hollas). Pope Gregory was an important figure in the early church, and played an essential role in developing missions in Western Europe.…

To think that I would have a completely different way of thinking about my daily activities from research of a painting of “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Heironymus Bosch, this painting is a part of our first year read book that is brought up on many occasions by Frans Dee Waal who relates it back to the Bonobos. This painting required much time looking at and much research. To me this painting has made me come to think so much about temptations that we fight in our life, to me as a college student there’s so many temptations that I fight everyday, They are displayed in the painting through fruits there is a bramble bush that grows black berries, a pelican feeding its young, men holding fruit with a stroke’s head, they represent that temptations are all around us, they can consume us and they will make us weak. To give some background on the painting, the painting is a triptych, which were made for religious purpose and placed on a alter in the churches, but if you when you are to look at this painting you don’t see that…

During the end of the 11th century, large civilizations in Europe and the Middle East had risen to conflict. The Catholic Kingdoms had originated from the Roman Empire after the civilization had fallen. The Kingdoms expanded its territory from present day France through present day Hungary; essentially Western Europe (Crusades Map). In the Catholic Kingdoms, the Pope had control of all church affairs, and the priest had control over a single church (Ellis 217-218).…

Just like before with incredible speed we left the moon and approached another heavenly body. The next planate or circle that I saw as during the ascent appeared to be Mercury which due to its extreme heat as Beatrice explained in her motherly voice is reserved for the Ambitious, which aspire fame and light. We landed on the surface of the body and it was hotter then anything that I had experienced back home. During my tour here I meet many great men but the one that hit closest to home was probably Emperor Justinian he introduced himself to me in regal form as” Caesar I was and am Justinian.” This brief exchange made me thin how his earthly titles have been stripped away in this place, but his personality remains even here in heaven.…

The Renaissance was an age of learning and revival of classic Roman and Greek art and culture. Paintings of the Renaissance often focused on religion but also focused on creating realistic humans. In 1518 the Renaissance painter Titian completed his masterpiece “The Assumption of the Virgin” for the altar Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari Basilica in Venice. The piece is a depiction of the Virgin Mary rising from Earth into heaven through angels taking her away from the Apostles and towards God. The painting promotes the idea that the Apostles, the Virgin Mary, and God are powerful, religious, and it promotes the Catholic Church.…
