1. When and where was the story written or told? What historical, social, or cultural background might be needed to understand or explain what the story is about?

Just Lather That’s All was set in Columbia in the 1900’s during a spanish war. The specific setting is a barber shop on a very hot summers day. To understand the story you need to understand who was involved in the conflict and what side the barber is on. When you understand the conflict of the story you understand what the story is about you can understand the internal conflict of the barber. The barber has an internal conflict about whether or not to kill the Captain or let him go. He either faces having to hide a body or be punished by the rebels.

The conflict that drives the plot is the internal conflict of the barber deciding whether or not to kill the captain. There is a external force against the barber that causes the internal conflict. Captain Torres is so close that it would be easy to kill him. If he killed Torres is would be almost like revenge but he would have to dispose of the body. If he doesn't kill the Captain with the easy change we would be despised by the other rebels. The climax of the story is the tension of when the barber decides whether or not to kill Torres. The barber is trying to decide wether you to do his job honourable or take the opportunity. The conflict is resolved when the barber decides that just having “lather” on his hands would be more honourable than …show more content…
The theme can be don't judge a book by its cover and morality. The story really reaches “dont judge a book by its cover” at the very end of the story. The last words of the story create a big impact for both the atmosphere, theme and how the barber perceives Torres “They told me that you'd kill me. I came to find out. But killing isn't easy. You can take my word for it" Tellez pg1. You learn at the end that Captain Torres doesn't really enjoy his job or what he has to do for it.
Morals play a huge role in society and many stories. In almost all stories there is a conflict between the good and the evil and what is right. The barber has a battle of his morals on whether or not to kill the Captain to be a “hero” or just a barber. The barber learns that maybe everyone has their own place in the world. This part of the story highly compared to the depiction of the devil and an angel on you shoulder. He has to choose between doing something good or bad. The barber used his morals to make the decisions. This portion of the story helps support the theme :
“You came to me for a shave. And I perform my work honorably. . . . I don't want blood on my hands. Just lather, that's all. You are an executioner and I am only a barber. Each person has his own place in the scheme of things. That's right. His own
