The Halo Effect is the effect of an observation of a viewer on his/her feelings and thoughts about a person, object or brand’s personality or properties. The term ‘Halo Effect’ was coined by a psychologist, Edward Thorndike, in allusion to the person or brand having a halo. The term ‘halo’ is used in comparison to the religious concept, wherein, ‘a glowing circle’ can be seen floating above the heads of pious, saintly people in old Renaissance paintings. The saintly face is seen to be bathed in a light from his/her halo. Hence, the halo depicts that that person is respectable and earnest. In short, one transfers their judgement of one easily observable aspect of a person to a judgement of that person’s entire character.
Judgment is defined as ‘the ability to make considered decisions’; the perceived impressions that a person receives upon first glance. The first appearance of a person always sticks in the mind of the observer and they assess the person as negative or positive based on that impression. This is why during public speaking or interviews one should always appear to be confident and pleasant rather than distant and unsure.
