Journey Of Death Of Odysseus In Homer's Odyssey

Journey of Death Odysseus is the said hero in Homer’s epic The Odyssey, though his actions speak louder than his words. The Odyssey is the returning journey of Odysseus for ten years with an additional ten years from the Trojan War. On his journey he finds monsters, beasts, and gods. He also kills every single person in his crew “on accident”. Although Homer intended to portray Odysseus as a hero, he does not deserve the title of hero because of his self-centeredness causing his crew an unnecessary death in his return. Odysseus should not be called a hero because his hubris is to overwhelming when fighting the cyclops, Polyphemus. His crew had been worried that the cyclops would throw a boulder at them and claimed, “Godsake Captain! Why bait the beast again? Let him alone!”(Homer, lines 493-494). Odysseus had blinded the cyclops and then on his departure he calls back to say his name is Odysseus so the cyclops knows who blinded him. Odysseus should not be considered a hero because he continued to taunt his enemy though beat which is poor sportsmanship. Their physical forms were changed into that of a swinish being, “Bodies, voices, heads, and bristles, all swinish now, though minds were still unchanged”(Homer, lines 572-573). Odysseus was selfish to find his fate that two of his men had been turned to bacon. He was self-centered and lacked the ability to empathize and mourn over his some of his many lost men. Odysseus does not deserve to be called a hero because the life of his crew is lesser than important than that of the arrival
