John Wayne Gacy Research Paper

John Wayne Gacy was a notorious serial killer known for murdering young men and boys in his own home and then burying them in his crawl space. Gacy was also known for dressing up as a clown to entertain children, an action that would earn him the name of Killer Clown.
Gacy wasn’t all bad though. He was good father, did charitable work, and was even involved in politics. However, many say that no amount of good he did could make up for the men and boys he murdered. Despite what Gacy did, he was always a good child. For those that knew Gacy they couldn’t believe he was capable of such a horrendous act.
Early Life

Despite not graduating high school, Gacy managed to enroll in the Northwestern Business College. It was there that Gacy discovered he was a natural born salesman. After graduating in 1963, John got a job as a management-trainee at Nunn Bush Shoe Co. in downtown Chicago. A year later Gacy was promoted and transferred to Springfield, IL to manage a men’s clothing outlet. Later that year in March, Gacy was engaged to Marlynn Myers. Marlynn was a co-worker within Gacy’s department. About a year after they got married, Marlynn became pregnant and the couple had a son name Michael. John was a very nurturing father despite how his own father treated him. It was only about a year later that Gacy left his job to move him, his wife, and their infant son to Waterloo, IA. Gacy’s father-in-law owned three Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants out in Waterloo and asked Gacy to take a management position over them (John Wayne Gacy – The Killer Clown). Once in Waterloo, it didn’t take too long before John had become a member of the Waterloo Jaycees. In 1967, Gacy was named State Chaplin and Man of the Year by the Jaycees. The next year Gacy ran for president of the Jaycees but his campaign was surprisingly cut short-Gacy had been accused and convicted of sodomy (John Wayne Gacy Part 01 of 01, 15). He was given a ten year prison sentence but he only served eighteen months before he was let out for good behavior. While in prison …show more content…
What Gacy would do is pick up boys that had previously run away so when they were reported missing, the police figured they had simply run away again. This worked until Gacy made the mistake of picking a boy that had no reason to run away at all-Robert Piest. When his parents reported him missing, a search for Piest was quickly started. When the police found out that Piest was talking to Gacy before he disappeared, they questioned him. Gacy, of course, claimed he didn’t do it. The police got a warrant to search Gacy’s house where they found items belonging to other missing boys and a coat with a photo receipt in it. It turns out that Piest’s girlfriend had him pick up some picture for her earlier that day and the receipt found at Gacy’s was in Piest’s pocket when he disappeared. The police wanted 24/7 surveillance on Gacy, which wasn’t easy. Gacy would often lead them on fast chases to nowhere and just drive around aimlessly. He was finally arrested for possession while driving around supposedly saying his goodbyes and giving kids drugs. The police eventually got another search warrant for Gacy’s house and this time started digging in the crawlspace where they found human bones. Apparently an officer had used Gacy’s bathroom at one point and the furnace kicked on while he was in there. The officer distinctly remembered the smell of death. They

The author style was very formal when giving the gruesome discovery of the almost thirty bodies they found in Gacy house in the crawl space. Even though I never been in a morgue when the detectives were inside Gacy’s home and he described the smell, I could smell an awkward smell while reading that part of the book. Gacy made a statement to one of the officers. “Clowns get away with murder” (Sullivan & Maiken, 2013, p. 90).…
