Although John the Baptist’s birthdate is not known, we know from scripture that he was born in Jerusalem to Zechariah (a priest) and Elizabeth. He is a relative of Jesus Christ through his mother’s family line and was about six months older than Jesus. John the Baptist was a preacher in the wilderness and the last prophet in the New Testament. While living in the wilderness (desert), John’s diet consisted of locusts with honey. He is mentioned in the Book of John, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, and 1, 2, and 3 John. John the Baptist was sent from God to preach His word and be the messenger for the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. John the Baptist got his name from baptizing people in the Jordan River, where he baptized Jesus Christ.

John's relationship with the church during the latter years of his life was a rather turbulent one, which underwent several changes. The turmoil began upon Hubert Walter's death in 1205, when it could not be decided who was going to be the new Archbishop of Canterbury. It could be argued that this was a change in John's relationship with the church, but it is perhaps more significant that it was the catalyst for a huge chain of events that would change John's relationship with the Church more significantly. Some historians hold the view that 'the basic cause of the quarrel was the issue of who was to appoint the archbishop of Canterbury when Hubert Walter died in 1205'.1 The schism created by the opposing opinions on who was to be elected as Archbishop of Canterbury was hugely significant, and in a letter to from Pope Innocent III to the bishops in England, in 1207, Innocent writes that John is 'persecuting'2 Stephen Langton.…

The Book of John is foundational to the Christian faith. As a foremost document declaring the deity of Jesus, the text decisively establishes that He is God. Contained in the book, there are clear declarations by Jesus where He uses the name of God for Himself. By using the Old Testament name of God, “I AM,” Jesus is speaking in a style that presents Himself as deity. One place where this testimony is undisputable is in the description of the Good Shepherd.…

After reviewing all of the terms listed, I chose to define the following terms covenant, Mount Sinai, and the Tabernacle. To begin with, a covenant is a rule or order passed down by God to his followers to full God’s purpose in the world (Tullock & McEntire, 2012, p. 58). Subsequently, the Israelites are convinced that through Abraham their people were chosen to adhere to this binding contract, and as a result of their loyalty, their people would receive the blessings God (Tullock & McEntire, 2012, p. 58). Furthermore, as the Old Testament continues in the Book of Exodus after God reiterates to the Israelites if they obey the covenant, then he will consider their people a treasured possession (Exodus 19:4-6, New International Version). Now, that we understand the covenant between God and the Israelites, let us identify the purpose of Mount Sinai.…

The verse that stuck out to me the most was one I have read many times but only today did it really stand out to me. It also stuck out to me how humble John the Baptist was when being questioned by the Pharisees.…

I chose to write about Matthew and John because they are the first and last of the Gospels. I am also the most interested in these two books since one is a synoptic Gospel and the other is not. Matthew and John are both Gospels. However, Matthew is a synoptic gospel and John is not. John is different than all the other Gospels and is not considered a synoptic Gospel because it does not contain the birth of Jesus.…

The Gospel of John is one of the four Gospels written to tell the story of Jesus’ life. Just as Matthew, Mark, and Luke have given their accounts of Jesus’ miracles so has John. Though these accounts may have their own way of telling what is important to them, the main fact is that these Gospels were recorded so that we may learn more of the word of God. “In order to understand John’s approach to the story of Jesus, the reader must recognize the centrality of the incarnation of the Gospel” (NIB 1905). The book of John begins, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).…
