Character Analysis Of John Proctor In The Crucible

John Proctor is the tragic hero in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The downfall of John in the play is due to a human flaw, which largely qualifies him as a tragic hero. John is a respectable farmer, who has a high social status .The tragic flaw was the physical attraction he had towards Abigail Williams, yet he had a wife. His wife realizes his husband’s acts of adultery and gets jealous. Proctor knows that he has the option to confess the deed. However, his pride comes in his way and he is afraid of ruining his name. However, finally, he is able to reveal Abigail’s’ flaws and he forgives himself. The people accuse Proctor of trafficking with the devil and signing his name on his book. The people arrest him. He faces execution for standing for what he believes is right.
Abigail Williams is jealous over Elizabeth Proctor and is on a revenge mission. She manipulates her followers and gains control over them. She causes the death of nineteen people in the community through her witchcraft. Just before the authorities bust her for engaging in witchcraft, she manages to pin the crime on Tituba and other citizens.
