John J. Mearsheimer in his book ‘The Tragedy of Great Power Politics’ analyses this statement through and through using the lens of offensive realism. Mearsheimer uses his years of experience in the military to theorize about international politics. ‘He feels that international politics has always been a ruthless and dangerous business’. In this book he takes the cases of different great powers in history to analyze their rise and fall. This is used to predict the future of world politics and what shape it will take in the 21st century. In Mearsheimer’s third book after Conventional Detterance (1993) and Liddle Hart and Weight of History (1988), the author conveys to the audience about how major powers in the past have and will continue to battle for control and authority over and establish a world order. The book is an analysis of the past, how and why major states fight. It also makes an attempt to determine future consequences of foreign policies of the US and emerging powers like China. Mearsheimer uses his past experience to understand human nature and what they are really capable of doing to one another.
