John Maxwell Leadership

John Maxwell, a well known author on leadership, believes that “leaders must be close enough to relate to others but far enough ahead to motivate them.” Section leaders are the people looked to first for what the band directors want and how they are expected to accomplish those directives. Great section leaders provide clear directions to their section on what is expected of them. Section leaders must be able to relate to, understand, and communicate with both the band directors and their section. Through my experiences in leadership both in and out of school I will be able to lead my section.
Relatability is a requirement for section leaders because it allows them to connect more deeply with the members of their section. The section members want a leader that they can see part of themselves in - even if it something as small as a shared interest in a tv show. I learned this while mentoring a class of freshman through the Students Active In Leadership(SAIL) program at the high school. The freshman in my class had to see that I was just as wacky and technically challenged in life as they were before they would respect my leadership. I understand and feel driven to perform to the best of my ability as a marching band member and hope to share that passion and understanding with the section as a leader and mentor. As a senior, I have been or am in their marching “shoes”. If I am selected for section leader I will engage the freshman and urge them to stay in band. I will try to make all members of percussion feel like essential members of the team. The more unified we are the greater the desire to do well as a unit. If each section performs their best, the overall band performance will be enhanced. I look forward to communicating your desires with the section in a way that will drive us all to

I believe myself to be outspoken enough to command band members to dress to one another, yet not too intimidating as to drain the fun out of the process. Since freshman year, I have improved upon my dressing to forms and getting to the right dot at the right time and having participated in theater has augmented my appreciation for correct spacing and saying true to the drill written in our drill books. I would love to see both underclassmen and upperclassmen improve upon their marching skills and ability to make forms and I would be honored to help them do so. As a brass captain, I feel as though I would benefit the band because I am enthusiastic and would encourage the brass put forth 100% effort toward every warm-up and play-through of the music. I would be sure to emphasize nuances of the music in rehearsal, such as dynamic changes and accent marks because I believe that a musical performance--no matter the ensemble--is not truly successful without genuine expression.…

High school athletics have impacted every aspect of my life, including my overall perception of myself. Personally, my entire high school career has been dedicated to cheerleading. Participating in this sport all four years of high school has provided me with opportunities to meet new people and improved leadership skills. I have learned the value of team building, dedication, responsibility, and determination. As I look back on all of the hard work, sweat and tears left on the cheerleading mats, I also recognize those who gave up their time to help me and how that has led me to help others.…

Being a drum major has helped me become a strong leader for the band and myself. As drum major I am the leader of the band, I direct them at parades, football field shows, and pep bands. I make sure everything is in order and help organize all our events with our director. Because I am drum major I have been able to help our band achieve the best they can and show it to our community by performing for them at their events throughout the year. If I were to be a section leader, I would be able to take on a challenge that few are willing to take on and be able to see the outcome of my leadership and how it affects the ensemble, which would be fulfilling. I would also be able to have the satisfaction of helping my section mates become the best marchers and people they can be in all ways I can. Best of all, I would be able to be someone people can easily approach with no judgement, which I feel everyone needs. Overall, being a section leader to me would be the most satisfying and enriching way for someone to be able to help the Marching Pioneers become better than…

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

From middle school to high school, band became a vital part of my life. It was all I knew, it was where I felt comfortable, and this was where I pratically began learning about my leadership skills. However, my curiousity grew when I was introduced to Class Council. I thought that there was no difference, and I naively thought that since I have been a part of a leadership role for about 4 years, everyone knows me, so I thought Class Council could not be so hard. I was terribly wrong.…

From freshman to seniors the members of the group saw me as an improvement from what was previously given to them and, therefore, welcomed my new position with great acceptance. According to the United States’ Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the national unemployment rate for the month of March is estimated to be 4.5% give or take. Unfortunately, during the next two months The Taft School’s unemployment will be about 6.5 times as high as the national average, standing at a whopping 29%. Every student at Taft has a role -- roles that come in a myriad of forms and combinations -- and this spring, in the wake of what is essentially the mental departure of the Senior class, roughly 160 of these roles will be vacated, destroyed, and reincarnated. The majority of this complex process of effectively redefining the specific roles of Seniors at Taft is completed during the spring, a spring that is meant to be particularly…
