During that time he was Ashley’s physician and once saved his life with an extensive surgery. Through this great experience he became friends with Thomas Sydenham, later became one of the most famous philosophers of that time, and also joined the Royal Society in 1668. John believed that the government should be much more tolerant to religious differences and because this was a new idea, he had to flee to the Netherlands to escape political persecution.
