I prepared for this assignment by reaching out to my district senator. I made an appointment with my senator named John Hoffman. I also read the required reading in the book. I thought the meeting would be more me talking about the bill I was supporting but it turned out to be so much more. I wrote him a letter and was planning on using this as a fact sheet.
I along with a small group of students meet with John Hoffman. He was welcoming and we sat and talked with him for about 30 minutes. He asked what brought us here and I began to tell ask him about the Death and Dying bill that was suppose to be on the docket for 2017. He had a lot to say about the bill and why he was against it. After this meeting with him and his willingness to walk and introduce us to the other senators, I am less worried about commutating with the senators. It’s too bad that we did not see more students talking with their senators so they could have had the same experiences.
PHN competency 8: Shows evidence of commitment to social justice, the greater good, and public health principles was demonstrated by me writing him a letter encouraging him to vote for the death and dying bill that will be on the docket in 2017. He pointed out that the death and dying bill would have not served the greater good that is why he did not support it. He told us about the bill that they just passed giving more money for education. I wish I would have said but the money we could save from the dying with dignity bill could be used in such a more positive way.
PHN Competency 11: Demonstrates leadership in public health nursing with communities, systems, individuals, and families. I did this competency by making the appointment and taking a small group of students whose senators did not reply to their requests. I feel this showed my wiliness to work with
