Joe Bucks: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Joe Bucks was just an ordinary 7th grade kid. In fact, he was so ordinary that everybody in his grade looked at him as if he were nothing. Everybody around him had some sort of talent, from running to playing the violin. Everybody had warned Joe that seventh grade is the hardest year to go through, but he never imagined it would be this bad. Nobody wanted to be his friend, and everybody made fun of him for having no talent. Joe was a little wimpier than the rest of his peers which made it that much easier for everyone to make fun of him. Joe lived in Seattle, Washington. Just like 95% of Seattle’s population, he was a caucasian male. He was the average height for a thirteen year old male and had an average IQ of 100. He had no clue where to start. He was thinking that he might want to include his name somewhere in the title. After a long time of thinking, he narrowed it down to two options: Joe Muggs or Starbucks. He couldn’t decide on which one he wanted, so he decided to ask people who were walking by to help him decide. By the end of the day, Joe Muggs had a total of 43 votes and Starbucks had a score of 57. He immediately went to the store to buy big letters to put on the front of the building.
“S-T-A-R-,” he said as he picked out the letters, “B-U-C-K-S.”
The “cha-ching” of the cash register made it final, his store’s name was Starbucks.
Once he got the letters up, he opened the next day. He couldn’t wait any longer. He waited at the cash register for someone to open the door. No one walked in on the first day. He decided that he might need to advertize. He was willing to do anything for his business, especially since he didn’t want to give up so soon in the process. He made a poster and put it up around a busy corner so that many people would see it.
That day, someone walked in. She was a tourist, so she didn’t know that it was a new building. She ordered a hot latte with whipped cream on top.
Once he gave it to her, he asked, “Do you mind telling people about my restaurant, it’s new and not many people have come

The next day, a big crowd of people came through. As Joe gave them all their orders, he asked them how they had heard of his restaurant. They explained to him that they had seen his restaurant get reviewed by a food critic and how it got a 5/5. They said that the food critic explained how good and how cheap his products were. Joe was astounded and later found out that the lady who walked in the second day, was in fact a food critic. He couldn’t believe that of all people, a famous food critic walked into his restaurant and actually enjoyed it.
Everyday more and more people started coming in. After a year had passed, Joe raised his prices a little to increase his income. Some people even came in and asked for a job. He was of course very lenient on who he picked, because he knew that he should give them a chance just like the other coffee restaurant gave him one. His business kept growing and growing. He started making more Starbucks around the area. Today (2017), there are Starbucks all the way across the

For our course project, my restaurant of choice was the Red Lobster located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. Red lobster is one of the world’s most famous casual/family seafood restaurants. It has been a staple of downtown Silver Spring’s eclectic dining community for more than 15 years. Interestingly enough, in all the years I’ve been dining at red lobster, I’ve never really given any consideration about what happens behind the scenes and the day-to-day operations. Luckily, after interviewing the manager, Harrison Shea, I’ve a better appreciation for just how challenging working in the restaurant industry can be.…

My expectations before participating in this activity was for it to not be as authentic as it was. I did not realize that there was a place downtown that had such real and good food and wondered why I haven’t heard of this place before. Also, I was surprised with the poverty I saw around the area. I have always grown up in areas that have a decent amount of money and have never been to a spanish speaking country or area before. This experience really opened my eyes to the fact that there are places out there that still have authenticity and still try to resist becoming “Americanized” in society.…
