Old School Vs. Modern Jiu-Jitsu
Today the most argued about topic in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is if modern Jiu-Jitsu is better than old school Jiu-Jitsu. This question, many times, has led to negative commentary or actions towards the opposing viewers. To help give a better understanding of Jiu-Jitsu here is its beginning. Jiu-Jitsu derived from the art of Judo by a man named Miysuyo Maeda; this man settled in Brazil and opened up a gym there with one of his best students Carlos Gracie. After working with his professor for several years, he soon opened up a gym of his own with a few of his family members, also studying Jiu-Jitsu. Not long after the Gracies moved to America to start another BJJ gym. BJJ did not really become well known

One of those perks being that it is taught with the goal of winning a competition against an equal opponent, not just self defense. It helps to teach how you can earn points in a competition so that your are not clueless on what you or your opponent can get points for during a competition. Modern Jiu-jitsu focuses a bit more on wrestling as a crutch along with no-gi training(your train in gis, also known as kimonos). These trainings are advantageous for Mixed Martial Artist that want to use Jiu-Jitsu in their fights. ATOS, a team that trains modern Jiu-Jitsu is an a great example when bringing up this argument. ATOS was founded by Professor Andre Galvao and Professor Ramon Lemos. Their teachings has gotten them many great achievements. A few, but not all,are first place no-gi and first place overall adult category in world championship, and first place in kids overall along with second in overall adult category in IBJJF …show more content…
Self defense is the primary goal when training. The Gracie idea was for anyone to protect themselves from an opponent of any size. The Gracie team, called Gracie Barra, is a great example of old school Jiu-Jitsu. Their background has already been put into context, but they also have many great achievements. The main and only one to be written about is their winnings in the Worlds Championship in Abu Dhabi.
