The Queen also imposed a dress code onto her male guests – a scarlet coat worn with a white waistcoat embroidered in gold. Madame Campan was to later recall the informal life at the Petit Trianon under the reign of Marie Antoinette, as she wrote: ‘(The Queen) entered the sitting room without driving the ladies from their pianoforte or embroidery. The gentlemen continued their billiards or backgammon without suffering her presence to interrupt them’. While Marie Antoinette was in residence at her Trianon she no longer played the part of Queen of France but instead lived as she innocently stated ‘like a private person’.
