Jet Plane: A Short Story

The fire was dwindling as the last words of “Leaving on a Jet Plane” were sang. Although it wasn’t the most mellifluous sound, the lyrics were still rhapsodic, completely filled with passion. I leaned towards one of my many beloved roommates from the past two weeks at camp, checking her features to see if she was crying as I was. Unsurprisingly, her tear-stained cheeks were glistening from the minimal sunlight still grasping onto the far end of Burt Lake that algid Friday evening. It was later in the summer, and August was right around the corner. The weather at Camp Algonquian for the past month had remained fairly warm, especially for being so far north, but this particular night was chilly. Despite the icy air being suspiciously unmoving, Amelia, my cabin mate, shivered and huddled close to me. My eyes wander the area during the silence that follows the song, taking in the gorgeous trees and dancing waves.
“Alright, it’s time for our final ‘Green Trees and Taps’, so lets’ all head over to the ultimate field”, the head female councilor, Corey, said. Her voice was incredibly hushed, as if a sleeping baby would awaken if she raised her voice. Another L.I.T., which is what you are for your last year of camp, from

It’s inevitable. Does that mean this summer is your last at Algonquian necessarily? No! Listen, if this place means this much to you, you will find your way back somehow. If for some unimaginable reason this is truly your last time here, then never forget all that camp has done for you, all the memories made, bonds created, ideas shared. Camp is a place that can never be forgotten and never outlived. The impression camp left on you is eternal. Although there is a chance you may never return physically, this place is forever saved in your heart.” Leahley pulled Amelia and I into a crushing hug, as councilors walked to each person, lighting their tea light candles that we hadn’t even noticed had been handed

What confuses me is why they call the book getting air when he never really goes skateboarding. One question I have is that it is very unlikely that Jimmy and all of his friends were the only ones who survived. I think the chances of that happening is compared to winning the lottery. Another question I have is how did an 80 year old woman survive the crash when all of her other friends died. Also a lot of those women were younger than her.…

Hand In Hand Comes Destruction and Creation “After the rain there is a rainbow”, after havoc and death there is the rebirth of something new, something better. This antithesis can be applied to Maxine Clair’s Rattlebone; a notable excerpt would be the short story “The Last Day of School”, where Irene portrays the epitome and final resolutions of her ups and downs that lingered throughout the story, reflecting on the overall theme: destruction and creation. With extreme chaos and fast-paced storytelling, Clair displays the epitome of both material and emotional destruction. Eerily noting that “the crash became the period at the end of the sentence about life in Rattlebone” (197), the narrator stresses the great impact the plane crash had on…

In an unspoken agreement, Tom had packed a bag and officially moved into Booker’s apartment. The dark-haired officer tried his damnedest to make the living arrangement work, but life in the cramped quarters was proving problematic. Tom spent most of the day asleep in the bedroom, the door closed, the defiant act a clear warning for his friend to leave him alone. It wasn’t ideal, being relegated to the couch in his own home was inconvenient, but Booker understood the reasons behind Tom’s behavior. The young officer needed time to process the senselessness of his brother’s death, time and space.…

As Chance secured the buggy, he watched Kat spread a blanket on the ground. She sat down, pressing her blue calico dress next to her ankles. Perhaps the mild April air reminded him of home, but somehow her simple action took him a lifetime away, to another woman, to another time, to memories he’d always hold dear to his heart. Thoughts of his own wife made him wonder how Jake had ever let Kat get away.…

Camp is place unlike any other. It is a place that people’s wall begin to fall down and new relationships are formed. This is bound to happen when you drop 200 teenagers in the middle of the Smoky Mountains without any of their electronics. I was lucky enough to be chosen for the Project Serve team and got to see camp from a new perspective. I got to be a part of all of the behind the scenes work, but also daily interactions with all of the campers due to my job at camp.…

It was the darkest I'd ever seen the night be, I'd always need to get rest to work the next day, but Pa woke me up telling me there had been many owl hoots heard and we had never had any owls at this farm. This got me very excited for I knew what that had in store for us.…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

“Wow!” I said to my dad as the coach bus rolled into the hilly parking lot of the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort on Mirror Lake. My eyes lit up with excitement like a dog seeing a new chew toy. The year was 2012, and I was a part of the Minnesota/Wisconsin Jr. Badgers also known as Team Lake Placid. The games were played at the Olympic Center where U.S.A beat the Soviet Union in 1980 in Lake Placid, New York.…

We walked back up to the front of the camp covered in sweat, glitter, and whatever paint ended up all over us. The usually five minute walk lasted twenty minutes because of frequent stops to dance at different points in the camp. We were laughing and jamming out when we walked into Andrews Hall, but that immediately stopped when we saw everyone doing Shapes. Shapes is a last day activity where every counselor writes on every other counselor’s “shape” (this year it was a piece of paper that looked like a candle) little messages for them to hold on to. This activity is accompanied by hugging and crying, because writing in shapes is the final goodbye that you get.…
