Jeremy's Response

Personally I really enjoyed Jeremy’s message and I believe he did an excellent job of connecting the points made in the book of Joshua to our day and age. He started his talk by sharing a story from his life where things were a little unexpected and this began to lead him into connecting the need to recognize that we serve a God who does things unexpectedly. Then he went into the story of how Joshua had to step into some pretty huge shoes and to fill those he had to trust God. Joshua was Moses’s right hand man, and he knew everything that Moses did, yet even Moses was not a person who was at the top of the list socially. When he explained the problems Moses had, he tied that point to how God even uses unexpected people. In addition, he furthered …show more content…

Willis D. Hawley and Sonia Nieto Wrote an article “Another Inconvenient Truth: Race and Ethnicity Matter” that looks into the problem that race and ethnic backgrounds cause in modern life. They use 4 main writing strategies in their article; Take on the Big Concepts, Call Out the Quiet Argument, Break Down Your Reasons, and Support Your Reasons. Hawley and Nieto take on the big concept by stating that there are “shameful differences in the academic outcomes and graduation rates of students of color compared too many Asian and white students” (Hawley and Nieto 1). They also shed some light on conflict by stating, “Being more conscious of race and ethnicity is not discriminatory; it’s realistic” (Hawley and Nieto 1).…

According to author Williams (2001), it is through our own personal histories and experiences that we develop lenses based on the sets of attitudes, views, and beliefs through which we see race, ethnicity, nationality, and culture. The book outlines ten distinct lenses, which were developed to help individuals gain a better understanding of how cultural diversity affects our personal and professional lives. Each lens is described detailing its strengths and weaknesses, legal aspects, professional ties and providing information on ways to apply and develop the lens. By identifying and understanding these lenses, we can understand how we view others and they view us. Through my own assessment, I identified with multiculturalism and…

The idea of isolation is not exclusive for immigrants and minority population, it is also in the majority population with little recognition of it, it is a big idea in the society. Isolation is a physical and psychological state that every person had to have experienced in their lifetime. Kelly and Rielly grew up in a rural neighborhood, where neighbors are fairly distant with them and separated by sparse land. Along with that, their relationship within the family are not close and on top of that, they live by themselves for a few years. To begin with, it won’t be that wrong to say that the idea of “ethics” or “morality” is the only thing that differentiate us (human) animals. Inasmuch as it is important to have a sound ethical system for the existence of a balanced and harmonised society, it is also no less important to acknowledge the fact that we cannot attain objective ethical values without a well defined reference point. Presuming the fallenness of creation, the ability of reason or human cognitive faculty to make ethical choices is severely marred. Therefore, reason cannot be the point of reference if we are to achieve lasting ethical values that would guide us in making sound ethical judgments. It has to come from somewhere (or someone) else that transcends reason and…

While analyzing the required text for this week there were five ethical categories that reoccurred through each document: responsibilities to parents, collaboration, community, personal development, and students. In addition, there are other categories, but these are the most significant to me. Special education teachers have a responsibility to parents: • Use culturally appropriate communication with parents and families that is respectful and accurately understood (CEC, 2010). • Actively seek and use the knowledge of parents and individuals with exceptionalities when planning, conduction, and evaluating special education services and empower them as partners in the education process (CEC, 2010). • Respect the private nature of the special…

Being raised by first generation immigrants, I have learned to value the dreams, aspirations, culture, religion and perspectives of all people, regardless of their racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. I grew up in a Persian culture and have been taught by my parents to respect and value the wide variety of cultures and beliefs. A major factor in how my parents instilled the idea of respect for others in me was by regularly attending multicultural programs in San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley, California. Participating in cultural and social events at these programs has given me the opportunity to mingle with individuals of different backgrounds who each bring a different perspective to conversations and environment. Nobody can deny the fact that culture generally mandates your views, perceptions, and ideas about the world and its qualities. However, while this may hold true, there are factors that can easily disregard and usurp culture from fully monopolizing one’s mindset. For example, Thomas Jefferson high school is a huge blend of cultural groups. There is little to no disparity, and all are seen unique, yet still the same as their peers. One’s experiences and culture both partially, whether equally or not, affect their views on the world.…
