Jeremy Black Research Paper

Jeremy Black is a professor of History at the University of Exeter. He studied at Queens' College Cambridge, St John's College Oxford, and Merton College Oxford before joining the University of Durham as a lecturer. Where he gained his PhD and ultimately his professorship. He has authored over 100 books, mainly in 18th century British politics and international relations. Black claims Napoleon was more than a conqueror, that his deeds go beyond military exploits. Black states that Napoleon was a statesman that brought France out of the chaos of the revolution, and brought forth French dominance in continental Europe. He illustrates that Napoleon shaped Europe significantly in the beginning of the Europe’s dominance over the world. This text is in favour of Napoleon’s reign, it speaks highly of him and does not focus on Napoleon’s negative contributions to history. This source will be used in multiple body paragraphs, as Black touches on various important aspects of Napoleon, including the significance of the French Civil Code as well as Napoleon’s unique rise to power.

Gildea demonstrates that Napoleon’s influence stretches far beyond his death, into 20th century film, literature and popular culture. However, his legacy has not ceased to be controversial, as historians, authors and filmmakers are still divided on Napoleon significance. Gildea is biased towards Napoleon, as he stresses on the greatness of Napoleon. However, Gildea is able to highlight the perspectives of Napoleon’s critics as well.
