Wolf Wagon Jenny Mars

‘Hey Renna. Come here.’

She hesitates; then swivels around. The Freo Doctor blusters in, and tiny white-capped waves roll onto the shore. Pelicans drift on an updraft. She could see the Swan River from here. Room seven, what a great view she thought.

He was asleep with his mouth open. Now he was calling out to her again.

‘Get me some Coke and ice.’

She pulls his oxygen mask away from his face so that she can hear him. He waves his hand, and points to his mouth.

‘I’m dry. Coke, with ice.’

His skin has turned dark, Moccona coffee dark.

Renna reads a sign - QE11MC Smoke Free hospital. She could really go for a strong brew and a ciggie. Renna finds a nurse who was drying his white hands on paper towelling.

She held their gaze. They eyeball her – waiting for a crack.
‘He keeps making noises,’ said Renna. ‘Can he still feel pain?’
‘We have that covered, Ms Gayde,’ the specialist said. His voice was calm with training. ‘He won’t feel any pain.’ Renna’s phone buzzes and whines. She excuses herself from the room to answer it.
‘Leave me the fuck alone Stan,’ she said. Her lips twitch.

She plays with the channel changer, anxious for them to leave. I bet they think that I’m a bomb ready to go off Renna guesses. There will be trouble with this one they must think. She could see it in their eyes. ‘If you have any questions Ms Gayde, please ask his nurse, or they can page me.’
The specialist slips from the room with the conscientious trainee in tow. She nods at the right time as he whispers in academic tones and dangles the stethoscope around his

She caught an empty lift down to the ground floor in search of coffee. Renna catches a glimpse of a wild haired woman. Renna’s hand touches the mirror - that’s me. She rakes her fingers through her hair. The soft rush as the lift doors close behind her soothes her.
Renna fumbles for coins but manages to order the coffee. She forgets her change and goes back for it. ‘What are you all staring at?’ she said.
The café owner pushes the security button.

Renna plunges out into the light pulling her army cap tight.

He was inside under the fluorescent lights, tucked into white sheets. Renna was outside under the summers’ sky. A wattle bird chuckles and she sips - her lips edge towards the hot rim.

Renna’s beaded earrings reflect rainbow prisms onto a nearby taxi. She moves her head and watches the light show; jiggling her legs. She felt wired.
‘Ice! Yeh you can have the ice mate, but not the coke,’ Renna said out loud. She grins at a young subbie dressed in high-vis.

‘Got a smoke?’ said a patient. A pump whirs and a plastic tube emits a liquid from the woman’s stomach.

‘Fuck off,’ said Renna. ‘Can’t you read the

R.J.’s wife needs to know that her husband is getting the best care available. I would then explain how the heart has a sac around it to protect it – this is called the pericardium. His injury caused the pericardium to fill with fluids and blood, so the surgeon had to remove the fluid by carefully inserting a needle into the pericardium to drain the fluid. When the surgeon removes the fluid, it will allow your husband’s heart to work better and efficiently. We were careful to make sure R.J. did not feel any pain and he is now going to the intensive care unit for observation.…

“I’m sure you’re a great piece of ass, and you’re going to be a lot of fun to play with, but I’ll likely get tired of you eventually. Now, don’t you worry, if I killed every bitch that I kidnapped, there’d be bodies strung all over the Tri-State Area, and, besides, I don’t like killing one of my bitches, unless it’s absolutely necessary. I’ve rather devised a safe alternative, instead. You will be heavily drugged at the end for a period of days, maybe as long as a week. You’ll be kept drugged, in a hypnotic state, in a highly suggestible state, while I brainwash you and confuse you, and you won’t remember a fucking thing about our little adventure, piggy.…

Before acquiring a certain raven haired detective, the downtown GCPD was a busy little place, the kind of place that low end criminals sat in tiny cells and await with one another without having to deal with the nuts at Arkham. The weekend meant that cops officially had their hands full, and even if downtown GCPD was obscure and unknown, the swell of low end criminals brought to GCPD was enough to keep it running. The cells were small and old, and other than a decent view of the water, that was pretty much all it had going for it. The downtown GCPD was always dealing with something from the petty drunks to the common thieves.…

It is astonishing how your life, or someone else’s life, can change in a blink of an eye, I thought during the car ride to the hospital. A man, my father, who had been an athlete in his adolescent years, full of power and energy, was now lying in a hospital bed. As I watched him lie there, hopeless and powerless, I couldn’t bear the fact that I had no control over the situation; it all lay in the doctor’s hands. The day began the same as usual; I get dressed, eat breakfast, and wait for my mother to get ready, so she can drive me to school. That morning my father left earlier than usual that day; I realized as I was staring into the empty parking space, where he parked his ‘bumblebee’ colored electric scooter.…
