Jem instructs Scout to leave an innocent insect alone because it's defenseless and it hasn't done anything to her. I think that with Tom Robinson's case, Jem has acquired maturity and therefore understands that just like the bug that Scout was about to kill, there was no legitimate reason to kill Tom. Scout thinks that Jem is the one who is becoming more like a girl and in my opinion, this is due to the fact that he's more sensitive to those who are harmed. Therefore, Jem has become more compassionate. Scouts then thinks back about Dill who recounted to her when he and Jem accompanied Atticus to announce to Helen that her husband had died.…

It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (Lee 149). By taking this advice, Jem and Scout will learn to always do what is just and not what is easy or popular.…

In To Kill a Mockingbird, the court trial of Tom Robinson, an alleged rapist, shakes the entire town. This happens despite reassurance from the community around him. The reader comes to see Jem’s reality drastically change based on the jury’s biased opinion, Jem’s own newfound reasoning, and his growing empathy towards Boo Radley, a social recluse.…

There are many pieces of evidence in the book “To Kill A Mockingbird”, but here are the ones that stand out the most throughout the book. For example, when Jem argues with Atticus about Mrs.dubose and how she is nothing like a proper lady should be, he says, “She had her own views about things, a lot different from mine, maybe...son, I told you that if you hadn’t lost your head I’d have you go read to her-I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. ”(Lee, 1960, p.149). From this quote we can see that Atticus has a lot of respect for Mrs.Dubose even though her views about certain things are very different than his. Atticus wanted Jem and Scout to learn that real courage is not a man holding a gun in his hand, it’s about taking chances and doing things even if you think that you’re not going to win.…
