At the beginning of Robert Louis Stevenson book “the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” a strong sense of relationships is given based on the fact that all of the characters have known each other for a great deal of time, besides of course the strange Mr. Hyde who is new to these characters lives. The book opens with Mr. Utterson and gives a lengthy description about him. “ Mr. Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourses” (Stevenson 5). “She was surprised to recognize in him a certain Mr. Hyde, who has visited her master and for whom she had conceived a disliking for” (Stevenson 21). She notifies the police and they come to search his house. A long with the police Mr. Utterson goes with the police to search the house. Mr. Utterson is truly concern about Dr Jekyll by showing emotions of worrying for his friend. Mr. Utterson sense of the mystery grows and events get weirder and weirder. Jekyll house to check on him. He notices since Hyde disappearances that he looks deathly ill causing which leaves Mr. Utterson in an uncomfortable feel about the whole situation. Jekyll says police shall never fine Hyde and they should stop their investigation also Mr. Jekyll is worried about his own reputation being ruined. Causing Mr. Utterson to know something evil is going on but he still cant figure out what’s happening and also what his friend could be hiding. Friendship seems to keep the story moving, if Mr. Utterson wasn’t friends with Dr Jekyll then why would he be concerned with what might be going on to Dr. Jekyll. For Mr. Utterson being Dr Jekyll Lawyer they have much more then just a business relationship, they have a true friendship. The main problem Mr. Utterson is having with the relationship between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is why Mr. Jekyll who seems like a nice respectable man would ever want to be connected with an evil man like Hyde. Even though Mr. Utterson is described as a cold man yet through out the book he shows compassion and interest in what’s going on in Mr. Jekyll life because he doesn’t want to see anything bad happen to him showing the sense of empathy.
