Jealousy: My Definition Of A Good Life

Great Essays
It is easy to slip into a state of envy when comparing your own life to someone else’s. This is due to the fact that jealousy comes when hearing of another's success without considering the hard work and dedication that was put in, the many obstacles that had to be overcome, and the pain and suffering that person was forced to endure. In the end, this comparison is hastily performed and the results are incorrect because the comparison was made between your whole journey, including both the good and the bad, and the other person’s success, without taking that person's failures into account. I feel that my life is still somewhat short of being labeled ‘good’; however, to my family back in Pakistan, just the thought that my life may not be flawless is hard to comprehend. The conditions they live in are far worse than anything I have ever experienced, but my life has its own hidden flaws that prove why comparisons like these are unreasonable.

I am surrounded by a loving and caring family in a comfortable environment and I can say with complete certainty that any member of my family will do whatever is in their power to make sure I am safe from anything that threatens my mental and physical wellbeing. If, God forbid, something happens to my parents or siblings, I have the security of knowing that I have aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends to lean on, I have the security of knowing I won't have to rely on strangers for help. Most importantly, if something tragic happens to a loved one, I will be devastated, but I will not spend the remainder of my life waiting for them to return. From experience I know that slowly, but surely I will move on. While this may seem a bit redundant, there are people who never get over the death of a loved one. Some even turn to their own death to relieve themselves of this

The aphorism, “Envy is ignorance,” is about how people desire what other people have and don’t appreciate what they already have. People are often envious of other people’s lives, but we are only envious of our own assumptions about our subject. We only see what that person chooses to reveal to others and what we ourselves believe. Emerson’s main message is it is foolish to want to be like other people and you should just be yourself.…

Summary and Reaction to ‘There’s More to Life Than Being Happy’ Emily Esfahani Smith’s article ‘There’s More to Life Than Being Happy’ (The Atlantic: June 2013) discusses the ideas in a book written by Viktor Frankl, a prominent Jewish psychiatrist and neurologist who was a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp. In his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl concludes that camp prisoners who had found meaning in their life were more satisfied and therefore more likely to survive. Those that had merely been happy in life found it harder to keep a good morale and were less likely to survive. Smith goes on to cite many different sources that give statistics as to how more and more Americans are finding happiness in their lives, but no true meaning.…

And although they know people eventually die, they may never believe it will happen to someone they love during their lifetime. That may be a reason why an individual may not be prepared for the situation, and everything that comes with it: The funeral expenses, financial stressors of not having that additional income and, the most difficult part, adjusting to the absence of the loved one. This was the unfortunate case of Sophia Peterson, who lost her father at the age of 12 due to suicide.…

Humans have the tendency of comparing their lives with others and in doing so; they miss the charm of enjoying small moments of life. Couples tend to deviate from focusing on gathering happiness and love to be experienced together and rather strive to improve materialistic aspects of life. Unfortunately, couples do not realize the essence of a relationship and most of them think that getting a promotion, driving a better car or living in a lavish house is more important than staying happy and content with what they have. Lack of understanding and communication adds a rift in a relationship that becomes more a liability than a delightful journey which is filled with emotions of love and care. And when a relationship goes through…

The Neverending Desire for More Alain de Botton argues in his article, “Equality Expectation and Envy,” that as Western society has had increasing success, a sense of failure and disappointment with oneself has emerged. In his analysis, he states that people must stop comparing themselves to one another; instead, they should focus on curbing their own desires and being satisfied with all of the material advancements that can be enjoyed in today’s world. Botton overall discusses how Western civilizations’ increase in success and egalitarian beliefs, rather than historic religious class separations, has led to an overall rise in status anxiety; furthermore, he examines how fear of deprivation can be caused by comparison within one’s reference…
