On the evening of February 21, 2018, I attended a Jamey Aebersold live jazz concert featuring Howard Levy and Chris Siebol at the music building at UIC. Since, I had never been to a jazz concert prior to this one, I did not know what to expect, but since it was my first time, I was excited. In my opinion, the evening’s program was nicely presented. The musicians started by introducing themselves, Howard Levy, an American multi-instrumentalist who switched off with playing the harmonica and the piano and Chris Siebold who played the guitar and sang for a few songs. Due to that fact that they played all the songs together the texture of their songs were polyphonic.
One of the first songs that they performed was “Tri-State Boogie,” by Howard

The next song they played was, “Amor Ala.” Since the song started off with minor keys this song set my mood to be gloomy. The piece of music and the notes that were played in this piece, made me daze off into my own world leaving me alone with the company of my thoughts. This piece made me want to go back to the times I was sitting in my room, in my cozy bed, under my warm sheets, just listening to the sound of the raindrops, drip and the cars driving in puddles, making the water splash letting me to release the stress that I had. The harmonica started off beautifully with its dynamics of pianissimo. As the song continued, the melody of the song was overall really graceful. The very beginning of the song was breathtaking for me because of how elegantly it sounded. Levy switched to playing the piano which I found to be peaceful with the tune because it was beginning to be mezzo forte, but then switched to piano. This made me realize how amazing the song sounded. I wondered how many measures there were throughout the song and how many breathes they would have to take because the notes were held out for a long time, on the harmonica. The other musician, Siebol, was playing his guitar in the background throughout the whole song. I understand that this is a very important role to the piece that was being played because without the guitar, it would’ve been harder to keep the harmony and melody. The tempo and the melody stayed the same throughout the song. Toward the middle/end of the song, the notes on the harmonica and piano were very low notes. This continued on or a while. After a few notes, on the piano, I came to the realization that Levy was pulling towards a central pitch which is tonal in which I found myself to be in a jolly mood. The music returned to its original tempo coming back to the same rhythm. The piece concluded with a long hold of notes such as half notes and eighth

Jazz History Concert Report II For my final concert writing critique, I decided to attend the live Ball State Student Jazz Combos on Tuesday, November 8; this event took place in Choral Hall inside of the university’s Music Instruction Building. The wooden hall was smaller than I thought it would have been, but it gave the concert setting a more intimate feel. There were three groups presenting that day, each under a different director. Because each group did not have a specific name, I had to label them based on the order in which they performed.…

From the very first song, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the performance despite me not knowing the genre very well. The first song, “Darlin’ Corey”, instantly caught my attention especially from the ‘bright’ banjo picking. The next song, ‘Freight Train’, was a completely different which had a more somber tone. In the beginning, it started very eerie-like until the banjo came in to brighten up the overall tone of the song. One of the notable moments of the whole concert was during the “In the Pines” in the first set, where the ensemble highlights the unlikely instrument, the French Horn.…

The first combo performed renditions of four popular Jazz standards: “Summertime” by 20th century American composer George Gershwin, “Bags and Trane" by Milt Jackson of the Modern Jazz Quartet fame, “Angel Eyes” by Matt Dennis and Earl Brent, and finally “One Note Samba” by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Excluding the instrumental “Bags and Trane”, each of the songs catered to complement vocalist Oriana Wisdom’s soulful singing and the call-and-response interplay of alto saxophonist Chris Suarez’s lyrical sax lines during the choruses. The combo opened the concert with Gershwin’s “Summertime”. The group perfomed the song in a slow ballad-esque form, arranged to highlight Wisdom’s luscious singing highly reminiscent of famed Jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. The quiet intimacy of the piece was complemented by drummer Zach Benator’s subtle brushed rhythm and bassist David Schroeder’s slow crawling bass line.…

On Tuesday April 25th, I attended a Bakersfield Jazz Workshop concert at The Mark. The group’s name that performed that night was J.T. Butler and Friends. The men who performed in the group that night were Steve Eisen, John Calo, J.T. Butler, Paul, Daniel Lopez, Doug Davis, and Rick Lincoln. Steve played the trumpet, John played the saxophone, J.T. Butler played the guitar along with Paul, Daniel Lopez played the drums, Doug Davis played the keyboard, and Rick Lincoln played the bass. The style of jazz music the group played sounded like blues and soul jazz.…

The concert was presented by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of Music’s UNC Jazz Band on Saturday, October 10th, 2015. The concert venue was located at UNC Kenan Music Building’s Rehearsal Hall. It started from 8pm to 9.40 pm. Compared to all the other concerts that I have gone to, the UNC Jazz Band concert was a definite change in atmosphere as it was a large band consisted of students. The stage was set up really well and has a nice lighting.…

During the final week of classes at Truman, I had the pleasure of hearing the school’s jazz bands in concert. During the concert, the Jazz Lab band and the Jazz Ensemble, both directed by Tim AuBuchon, played several jazz standards and modern favorites. The Jazz Lab band started out the night with five big band pieces. The instrumentation of the Jazz Lab band was standard for a big band; it included about four of each horn (saxophone, trumpet, and trombone), an upright bass, a piano, and a drumset.…

However, this section does not last long. The piece then becomes overwhelmingly depressive. Various instruments begin playing at once, with much more force than before. It is a similar melody to the first part of the song, but because the texture of the song has gone from single instrument to many instruments playing the same melody in a monophony, the original sadness becomes amplified, going from a longing ache to despair and defeat. Finally, in the closing section of the piece, the same melody gets played, but it is a few instruments at a time.…

The track’s almost abrupt and invasive opening is a clever trick to tie the narrative of the busy and chaotic day becoming the calmer and much more somber night. Cecil’s endearing yet, dangerously uneasy sounds replicated and accented by the piano and flutes and bells in the background, and among the almost wild-racing pace of the tempo towards the midpoint of the track, Cecil never manages to overwhelm the listener. He or she is instead immersed in the bursting color pallet of yellows, reds and oranges, as the tone shifts ever so subtly and elegantly into a much more spaced out and pause-heavy composition. The overall composure of the piece seems to follow the narrative of a sun setting and the transition into a starry…

The only part I can remember easily is the chorus because I feel as if it stays constant; he does not change the chorus. Listening to this piece, Jimi’s improvisation is a theme I notice. I have listened to the piece about 4 times and I have not heard any dissonant sounds in the harmony. To me it sounds consonant, all the instruments follow one another. I didn’t…

The singer had a long duration when singing certain words, but a soft dynamic. Even the instruments had a low and soft sound to them, which is why it was very calming to the ears. Towards the middle of the song, it changes slowly and the calming melody turns to something of an irritating emotional sound. The pitch gets a little higher, and the dynamic of the song gets slightly louder. However, it is the tempo that changes the most during this point of the song.…

If we consider the journey from beginning to end, the accompaniment travels from d minor to D major, perhaps symbolizing the parallel moments of night and day. The vocal lines moves in a similar fashion, traveling from a clear a minor accentuation down to a single pitch, displaying a descent into impassiveness. In the minor nighttime section the key centers move rather quickly and unpredictably. While only the three keys of d, a, and e minor are utilized, they are moved between in a manner only predictable by the last note of the vocal line preceding, highlighting the man’s busy brain, and fluctuation of emotion. While the night section of the song is notable for its volatility, the daytime section proves to be quite the opposite.…

As for “Do you Believe in Magic,” the song was written and produced in 1965 by John Sebastian. According to an article written by Ken Tucker about the band, members included Sebastian, Zal Yanovsky, Steve Boone, and Joe Butler. In his article, he highlighted that the bands style “blended the noisy passion of rock with the affable sincerity of urban music.” He also noted that the band sound is mostly gentle with a touch of good humor. As for this specific single, this song reached number nine in the U.S. pop charts, and later succeeded as a top 10 hit in 1966.…

The variety in this piece is that the soloist are going back and forth between their parts as if they are having a conversation or are saying something that they are all in agreement. The style of this piece is very uplifting as if to say “we are all in this together.” A point of unity is in the instruments and chorus, during this piece they were both strictly just the background sound. In many other piece, they have had their own parts and to describe it “responsibilities of their own” but they were just the behind the scenes in this piece, only to make the soloists sound the best they could. Whenever the soloist’s dynamic changed, the instruments would do the same to complement.…

The melody of this song was very slow and very relaxing to listen to. This piece was homophonic because the choir was accompanied by the violin. The violin also played beautiful four minute cadenza throughout this piece too. However, my least favorite piece was “Into the West” because the pipe organ accompanied the choir in this song which…
