Case Study In this situation, the nurse, Jay Kennedy, is tending to an elderly patient. The patient thinks that Jay is too aggressive and only responds with quick, short answers when he asks her questions. Jay does not realize he is not communicating properly with the patient.

I am writing to disclose information that I believe demonstrates a misuse of locus of authority, a breach of the American Medical Associations Code of Medical Ethics, and a breach of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center Code of Conduct by Dr. Bud Shaw. After verifying the facts of Dr. Shaw’s story with the employees that were on duty at the time of the incident, I have chosen to share the information with the administration of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. 407). I had been provided with a thorough theoretical understanding of interdisciplinary communication during my degree, however I lacked the practice and confidence to employ it in this situation. While I did lack the confidence to stand up for myself against my colleagues, I recognised the duty of care that was owed to my residents. Duty of care is founded in the laws of negligence and calls for nurses to conduct themselves in a reasonable manner in order to safeguard the rights of those under their care (ARAS, 2016, p. 1). I recognised that my inexperience and poor communication skills were effecting the quality of care that I was able…

This model advocates that when nurses communicate it is appropriate to use the first name of the person they are addressing in order to get their attention. The model further stresses that it is important to not only present the problem, but also present a solution and seek agreement to what has been proposed.
