I recently finished the book Thirteen Reasons why by Jay Asher. It is an interesting and a heart touching book, because it portrays a real life serious topic which is suicide. This book begins with an introduction of how Clay, one of the main characters in the story, arrives home from his school to find a mysterious package on his porch. In the package he finds a seven cassettes that are numbered on each side except for the last one, leading to number thirteen not fourteen as one would think. Clay seems to be confused, but is curious to find out what these tapes are about. The author Asher sets out a setting in the 1955 by the use of and old fashioned recorder instead of today's most used technology. Maybe he had witnessed someone who wanted to suicide? or is this simply a lesson to teach others of what to do when they are in the thought of suicide?. I came to the conclusion that it shows a tone of cautiousness. Asher demonstrates that one must be aware of how they are treating one and to act right away before it’s too late. If not one may be the reason why he or she decided to harm themselves. In this quote we see how Clay realizes that he could of been there for Hannah but it’s too late now that he is barely listening to the tapes.
“ I feel so much hate. Toward myself. I deserve to be on this list. Because if I hadn't been so afraid of everyone else, I might have told Hannah that someone cared. And Hannah might still be alive”.That night nothing was off limits. I would of stayed till you opened up and let everything out, but you didn't. ( Asher 210) Through Clay's words, Asher reminds us as the readers that we can’t wait until it’s too late.
