Jane Doe Research Paper

In the readings, Jane Doe was raped and otherwise sexually assaulted at knifepoint in her own bed in the early morning hours of August 24, 1986 by a stranger subsequently identified as Paul Douglas Callow. Ms. Doe rapists was known as the “balcony rapist”; she was Callow’s fifth victim. Ms. Doe brings a suit against the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force on two bases; firstly, she suggests that they conducted a negligent investigation in relation to the balcony rapist and failed to warn women whom they knew to be potential targets of Callow of the fact that they were at risk. Secondly, she said that the MTPF being a public body having the statutory duty to protect the public in accordance with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and may not act in a way that is discriminatory because of gender. On the other hand, a few years ago I knew someone personally who was sexually assaulted. she was afraid to tell anybody because she thought no one would believe her that her rapist was a close friend of hers. Many individuals that went through sexual assault complained about having similar effects as it did to the individual I knew personally and that they went recurrent intrusive nightmares, nausea, inability to socialize where strangers may be present and fear of men in general which impacted on everyday life, such as using the TTC at night. In the readings it states that the MTPF has since at least 1975 been aware of the problems it has in relation to the investigation of sexual results. This includes that many individuals who have survived from rape are not treated sensitively, there was lack of effective training for officers engaged in the investigation of sexual assault including a lack of understand of rape trauma syndrome and the needs of survivors and lack of co-ordination of sexual assault
