Profits from its sale created a boom in the colony, however, the pursuit of profits from tobacco agriculture diverted time and other resources from basic tasks, such as planting food crops and repairing building and settlers in Virginia continued to die at an alarming rate. There were certain laws that did not affect the common population as a whole but only the military. Such laws included forbidding the act of being absent when a man was summoned to take the oath of supremacy. It was required that “Every Souldier comming into this Colonie, shall willingly take his oath to serve the King and the Colonie” Similar to how the James I out casted the Irish, so too did Jamestown. Jamestown forbid the colonists from trading with the Indians, without the authority’s approval: “No man of what condition soever shall barter, trucke, or trade with the Indians, except he be thereunto appointed by lawful authority.” In addition to regulating colonist’s trade with Indians, the codes also regulated trade with seamen.…

In this editorial, I will be contrasting and speaking on two settlements: Jamestown, the very first English settlement located in Virginia, and the Spanish settlements. Mainly, I will be focusing on the religious and economic aspects of these two empires, as I believe these factors were the two main contributors to the everyday lives in these settlements. Interestingly, these two settlements are similar yet drastic in many ways, such as its foundation of beliefs and everyday life. Regardless of this, both of these colonies have contributed countless ways to the economical, societal, and political aspects of subsequent settlements and colonies to come.…

Roanoke was a perfect location to use as a base, so secluded that the Spaniards would be unable to locate it, and near the West Indies. This concept influenced the chosen colonist for this settlement. Veterans of the Irish or European wars were chosen for their experience, meaning they could protect the colony from any danger, but the colonists would be poor at building and maintaining relationships with each other and the Indians. Victims of England's labor system such as the servants or the children in poverty created a perfect “pool of colonists.” The first expedition left England on April 27, 1584 and landed on July 13 on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.…

Early Jamestown: Why Did So Many Colonists Die? English royalty and noblemen were very optimistic after they heavily funded the Jamestown expedition with the belief that the settlement would be a strong foundation towards the goal of colonizing the fertile lands of the Eastern Americas. Accomplishing such a daunting task meant the country potentially could have an abundant population to spread Christianity towards, discover new riches as the Spanish previously had done, and maybe uncover the Northwest passage providing a direct route to the Indies. To the country’s dismay, however, the desperate attempt seemed to have posed multiple flaws as the colony struggled. Lack of experience and data about these foreign lands meant their attempt at building…

Wondering how the first colonists felt, when they first arrived to the new world, Emily Amend and I started to play a game called Civilization IV. Civilization IV is a game that allows its players to create settlements, occupations, and alliances with others that would allow the citizens within the settlements to survive. Civilization IV, also, allows its players to feel like they were actually just coming over to America because the players had to make decisions that the first colonists had to decide for themselves- without knowing what kind of consequences entailed. In the colonization game, Emily Amend and I had six thriving settlements-Jamestown, Puddin, Wifey, Dogtown, bcygcfgxcgxc, and Georgia, but we encountered many obstacles within…

One of the colonists, Captain John Smith, tried to improve the state of affairs by encouraging the settlers to focus on building shelter and growing crops instead of wasting their time by looking for gold. He initiated a shaky relationship with the Powhatan Indians and established a trade with them. Smith asked the London Company would send more farmers and tradesmen to the colony, commenting that, “a plain soldier who can use a pickaxe and a spade is better than five knights.” (C&G 28) A colony that mainly consisted of gentlemen was doomed to failure.…
