James White Equality

Equality is something that our society has not yet mastered. In fact, people are treated far from equally in our society. One of the reasons that people are treated unfairly is because of racial bias. Racial bias is a hidden prejudice inside of many people that causes them to despise or look down on people of certain nationalities – most often those of African, Asian, or South American descent. The Student Handbook defines this discrimination against minority groups as “the practice of treating persons in different ways because of prejudice” (Carruth 211). Indeed, by discriminating against a certain group of people, we are treating them differently, usually as inferior to ourselves. Racial bias, although it may not be recognized by most …show more content…
In a talk titled “The Little Problem I Had Renting a House,” James White tells his story of the racial discrimination that he experienced in his own life. He relates how he was looking for a home for his family while in the Air Force in Idaho. He called an apartment rental place and was told that there were four or five apartments available. However, just an hour later, when he went to sign the contract, the woman saw that he was an African American and told him that they had just rented out all of the apartments and had no more available. He was very disappointed and realized that he had been lied to and discriminated against. James White experienced similar discrimination years later when he and his family were on a road trip from Idaho to Pennsylvania. They left early one morning and drove all day. Around 7 o'clock, they began to get tired and decided to stop at a motel for the night. They saw one with a big flashing sign that read “Vacancies,” so he went inside and inquired, but the attendant said that she just rented out the last room, as she turned and switched off the flashing sign. James went back out to his vehicle and as the Whites were driving away from the motel, they noticed the “Vacancies” sign turn back on and continue flashing. Since he had, in the past, experienced something similar, he tried not to get discouraged, but instead found a motel further down the highway that was not so prejudice against his nationality. Unfortunately, James White doesn’t happen to be the only minority in America that has experienced this cruel injustice of racial discrimination because of people’s personal bias. People all over the world are losing equal opportunities because of their racial and ethnic

Ever since African Americans were brought to the New World, racial inequality has been a huge issue both socially and politically. Whether it was slavery during the 1800s or the Civil Rights Movement in the 1900s, the fight for equal treatment between African Americans and Whites has been waging for centuries. During the 20th century, while race equality movements were being used to try and change views and attitudes, even respectable African American were still being treated as inferior to whites regardless of their class. One example of this is Tom Robinson and the Ewells from To Kill a Mockingbird. Tom Robinson is a respectable hardworking man.…

People all across the world are treated unequally, and they have been for years, just because of they way they look, their culture, their heritage, etc. However the two texts “Human Family” by Maya Angelou and Barack Obama’s Speech on Race clearly support the idea of all people having minor differences but in whole all of us are very similar in many ways. When Maya Angelou wrote the poem Human Family she was able to tell the reader the obvious differences among the people in a few ways. For example she said, “The variety of our skin tones can confuse, bemuse, and delight...” This shows how we all are different just by looks but Angelou is goes much deeper than this in her writing.…

Unfortunately, in the United States the color of an individual’s skin will have an effect on the way a person is treated. Agustin Fuentes in his essay “The Myth of Race” discusses how the social idea of race impacts the way some races are treated. Fuentes mentions statistics about discrimination due to race and that “In test of housing markets conducted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), black and Hispanic potential renters and buyers are discriminated against (relative to whites) nearly 25 percent of the time” (Fuentes 529). The race, or skin color, that renters prefers is showed to be white as blacks and Hispanics are more likely to be judged. The result of this discrimination tends to segregate neighborhoods between the good white communities and the black or Hispanic dangerous communities.…

Racial justice is one of the most sensitive topics and issues we have today. The text explains how there is racial inequality and racial stratification within different ethnic groups and races, for example minorities will be exposed to prejudice and discrimination through their lives while the dominant group will hold much greater power, privilege, and prestige in our society. Some examples of this can be based off of economic resources, education opportunities, life chances, and growth opportunities. In reference to the text, white people are blinded by the fact that racism still exists, the reason being is that they can go along and live a life with a system that is already in their favor, the privileges that are already built into their…

Equal Opportunity for Low-Income Students Equality - what does it truly mean? To most people, the thought of social equality raises questions mainly dealing with race and gender. For instance, a popular issue today is the wage gap; a statistical estimation that states a woman is paid 79 percent of what a man is paid for performing the same job with the same credentials (aauw). A matter like this can certainly be solved to a certain extent by policy with enough reinforcement and push; however, can all social injustices be somewhat solved by policy and law? Unfortunately, no.…

It is a fact that the United States has come a long way since the days of Jim Crow. Nevertheless, we are still fighting with a system and a sector of our culture that insists on holding on to old prejudices and stereotypes. The idea that we are all created equal and have the same rights under the law still needs to be realized for a good portion of minorities. Racial discrimination and inequality certainly need to be something in our distant past; it should only be seen in our history books with the purpose of ensuring that future generations do not commit the same social injustice. With the intention to contribute to the conversation about eradicating racial discrimination and inequality, the Executive Director of the "Opportunity Agenda",…
