Genres are a tool for studying academic, workplace and public environments. “A rhetorical audience consists only of those persons who are capable of being influenced by discourse (Bitzer).” The audience for the article from the journal of American College Health are healthcare professionals. Geographers and individuals interested in population displacement are the audience for Amanda’s literature review. Constraints are the rules of the situation. For example, the beliefs of the audience, evidence and the atmosphere of the environment. Constraints lead the audience to be more or less considerate to a discourse. A few constraints in both literature reviews are formal tone and lots of citations. Exigence in the real world like real problems and a lack of knowledge are another constraint. “A rhetor is said to work within the constraints of the situation (Grant-Davie).” Lots of citations are used in literature reviews. Citations are added immediately after a quote from an author. Amanda’s literature review uses anthropologists claims for informing on the background of a subject.
