President James Monroe is known for his numerous contributions to the United States of America as a political leader. Monroe was the fifth President of the United States, and he was the last President to be named as one of America’s Founding Fathers. Monroe is known for his Monroe Doctrine which states that the United States cannot be influenced or changed by the powers of any other country. Of course little is ever said about the life of James Monroe before he began his political career. It tends to be rather easy to dig up research about Monroe’s life as President, but it is not as easy to find information about the experiences that led him to his Presidency. During the year 1774, Monroe began his college years at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia when he was only sixteen years old. He remained at William and Mary for two years until he decided to join the Virginia Continental Army in 1776 so that he could fight in the Revolutionary War. Monroe participated in battles throughout New York, and various other colonies. Monroe fought along General (at the time) George Washington in the Battle of Trenton at Trenton, New Jersey. During this battle, Monroe was wounded by a potentially fatal bullet to the left side of his chest. The bullet shot through one of Monroe’s main arteries and would have without a doubt killed him if the doctor in charge of the surgery had not been well trained. Major James Monroe and General Washington fought alongside each other once again at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777 through 1778. However, the battle that took place at Valley Forge was not between the British Army and the colonists, but rather between the colonists and the harsh winter. During his time with this army, Major Monroe met his future law advisor, mentor, and friend Thomas Jefferson. In 1782 Monroe was chosen as a delegate in the Virginia Assembly. The nest year, 1783, he was then selected as a Representative of Virginia in the Congress of Confederation.
