She has no human interaction since the age of one, has been isolated in the basement for thirteen years. Katie behaves like an animal due to no human contact. Louise (Katie’s Mom) is tired of her husband abusing Katie so she decides to take her to social services and get her out of the house. The social workers assume Katie is seven years old, when her mother tells them she is thirteen; the social workers have her rushed to children’s hospital. After the court gets involved with the case, Katie’s abusive father Wes commits suicide. Katie’s mother suffers from cataracts, so she is unable to take care of Katie. Sandra is the social worker who is assigned to Katie’s case. DR. Norman Glazer from the children’s hospital allows Katie to live with his family for four years. They teach her how to become a civil human by speaking and using sign language. Sandra is a caseworker that has been in contact with Katie since she first arrived to children’s hospital. While Judy is a special Education teacher who thinks she can raise and handle Katie better than anyone else. Judy’s goal is to become famous from Katie’s case, by making her a civil human. As Katie is bounced around in many different foster homes, she is placed with a family that has another Deaf foster child named Colleen making communication easier for both. Her job causes her so much stress that she passed out one day at work. Her boss decided that she needed an assistant to help her, as it was obvious that she had too much on the plate. Her friend Annie talks about how in love she is, making Carla feel lonely and in need for a lover. Carla begins to interview applicants, but prefers a man as she is very lonely and wants some affection. Carla hires an ex-convict Paul, who is not qualified for the job, but she enjoys his bad boy image. She begins to train him how to file and make copies, making her job less stressful. One morning when Carla comes to work she noticed Paul sleeping in the closet, she asked him how long this has been going on for and he explains since he got the job. Carla then gives him money and gets him an apartment. Paul tries to make a move on her and she gets scared and leaves, Paul thinks it obvious by the gestures and gifts she’s been doing. Paul owes Marchand $70,000, he is unable to pay him, but Rob agrees that Paul can work at his nightclub in order to make up what he owes. He invites Carla to come to the nightclub, where he works but she mistakenly thinks that he’s asked her as a date. Paul knows Carla is a skilled lip reader and needs her help with robing Marchand’s business.
