This proves how a lack of influence from authority and civilization has caused Jack to lose his moral integrity, showing no sentiment in response to a situation as such. With Jack wanting to eliminate Ralph so that there can be no dispute over who is the true leader, he sends his group of boys on a manhunt for the old chief. Jack rallies up every boy to go after, and kill Ralph, and “[smokes] him out [by setting] the island on fire” (192). Long term isolation from the guidance of civilized society and authority has caused Jack to completely lose his moral integrity.…

“He looked in astonishment no longer at himself but at an awesome stranger” a quote from William Golding in Lord of The Flies. This quote illustrates how Jack transformed himself to a devil looking mad men and how his defects are becoming more apparent as the story develops. The leader of a boys’ choir, Jack, is the best example of Golding’s theme “a defective human nature can only create a defective society” because he had a cruel desire for mastery, he was wicked and sadistic, and he doesn’t show interest in the rules of order established on the island. Since the very beginning Jack had a cruel desire for mastery.…

Jack is a distinct example of the instinct of savagery, desire of power, and violent nature that the boys come to follow. Jack is Ralphs antithesis, or opposite in other words. Immediately, Jack retains the sense of decency and behavior that society has taught him. Susan Gulbin quoted Golding in saying "every man is part savage and that savagery is disguised or concealed only by the wall of civilization built by our ancestors" (Gulbin 87).
