Ralph And Jack In Lord Of The Flies

Throughout Golding's writing, “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph and Jack are seen as strong individual leaders. Jack is the boy to follow in physical aspects while Ralph was followed for great ideas and always seen as someone being there for all the types of boys on the island. Ralph had the common sense and education he would need in order to figure out the main problem on the island. Jack had common sense as in hunting and being physical for areas in which some of the boys needed. As both boys grow in the story, Jack’s innocence goes downhill. His innocence becomes lost while as Ralph’s does not. Ralph decides to think differently in an aspect whereas the civilization remains with him. Golding shows a contrast between Ralph and Jack through Jack’s loss of innocence and Ralph’s remaining attachment to civilization in order to show how evil destroys the good. He tries to get the boys to think as if there was an adult on the island as well. Ralph decides to remain rules unlike Jack and his boys. Ralph states what needs to be done in order to be the great leader he needs for the boys to become more civilized. Dropped “ I’m chief… because you chose me. And we are going to keep the fire going. Now you run after food “ ( Golding 150 ) . The fire is symbolized in many ways. Ralph sees it as rescue for the boys and himself. Jack would not establish rules for himself and the boys because he wants the boys to make sure they have freedom in their own ways. Ralph decides that the rules need to become permanent so each boy knows what’s right from wrong. “ and if we have a signal going they’ll come and take us off. And another thing. We ought to have more rules. Where the conch is, that’s a meeting. The same up here as down there” ( Golding 42 ) . Not only the fire but the conch is a symbol Ralph uses as leadership.
