Q #1: What is the species name of the model/study organism?
A: The species name of the green house whitefly is Trialeurodes vaporariorum.
Q #2: What is one piece of interesting information found in the introduction?
A: The most interesting part I found in the introduction was that almost all entomopathogenic fungal products contain conidia (asexual spores of a fungi) as an active ingredient. This type of production takes around 4 weeks of growth.
Q #3: What is the major question and/or hypothesis studied in the journal article?
A: The hypothesis in this article is the effective use of blastospores (a spore formed by budding, as in yeast.) of Isaria fumosorosea in an oil-based

The experiment I chose is called Thermotolerance assay. This experiment talks about how they compared the tolerance of blastospores and conidia by exposing both to high temperatures while increasing the times. Water-based holdups of blastospores and conidia were set to ca 1x〖10〗^7 〖mL〗^2 and detained in a water soak at 50 ± 1˚C for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 minutes. In those times they started finding changes. The predictor variables in this experiment were the temperature changes, while the response variables were the the number of germinated propagules. As they increased the temperature the germination percentage went down.
Q #6: What is the major conclusion of the study?
A: The major conclusion was that Blastospores are easily produced in liquid cultures, usually taking less than 4 days, which it is shorter than solid cultures for conidial production. The short decreased production time saves both time and money.
Q #7: Give a full citation of the article as well as other resources you used to help you answer the questions.

    • Macro and Micromorphology Analysis Colony diameters after 7 days at 25°C were as follows: CYA: 70-77 mm, MEA: 56-60 mm, YESA: 69-79 mm, OAT: 42-45 mm, CREA: 3-4 mm and CYA + 5% NaCl: no growth. On CYA at 10ºC conidia germinate, at 15ºC, 20ºC and 30ºC growth is evident with colony diameters of 9-17 mm, 59-71 mm and 56-86 mm, respectively. The species does not grow on CYA at 37ºC and 42ºC while at 33ºC the colony diameters varies from 0 to 22 mm, indicating that at this temperature the growth response varies among the isolates. At 25ºC in CYA, the species showed yellow mycelium, poor sporulation, abundant salmon to pink sclerotia production, and reverse pale yellow in color.…

The species are characterized by white slow growing cottony colonies that belong to the family of conidiophore generating Ascomycota. The conidiophores are usually short and bear lateral or terminal whorls of phialides which have a swollen, sometimes cylindrical base and thin, often bent necks. The conidia are one celled, hyaline, and formed in slimy heads [4]. T.inflatum T.inflatum, also known as Trichoderma polysporum and Beauveria nivea.…

I will, with instructor consolation, select one fungus to focus on that causes a health condition, preferably related to oral health. This selection will be geared towards my academic interest in biology as a pre-health student, and more specifically a pre-dental student. I will then compose a review paper after reading and researching more about said fungus. This review will include an up-to-date summary of what is known about this fungus and the related disease, with emphasis on the most recent publications. This will be different from the standard coursework for this class because it is primarily lab based, so this will give me the opportunity to do research on a specific fungus and will help me related it to the field I am interested in…

In a previous experiment it was determined that when the nitrogen is provided to the spores in the form of nitrates or nitrites, germination of fern spores can be inhibited or completely stopped by using higher concentrations (Milan and Whittier, 1990). On the other hand, when the nitrogen came from ammonium, the germination of fern spores increased (Milan and Whittier, 1990). The experiment determined that the effects of nitrogen from nitrates/nitrites and ammonium had the opposite effects on the germination of the fern spores and so the germination of spores that were supplied with nitrogen from ammonium nitrate was tested and it was found that these spores did not germinate as much as the purely ammonium spores but they did germinate better than the purely nitrate spores (Milan and Whittier,…

Through this experiment we were able to conclude that as the longer S. cerevisiae was let to colonize in the minimal media, the more cells/mL were found. This is clearly shown in the table demonstrating the number of plate counts that were found. Each plot on the table represents an allotted hour that we took a recorded measurement of the cell growth. Time points were designated for every 4 hours. 1.2 Prokaryotic Optical Density Figure 2: Prokaryotic Optical Density (600nm).…

The inoculated tubes were placed in the incubator for a 24 -hour period to determine how each organism reacted to the different degrees of pH. This is determined by the Spectrophotometer measuring the optical density of each culture. The last experiment of this lab tested the effect different osmotic pressures have on organisms. How to Grow Portobello Mushrooms in 3 Ways If you enjoy gardening, why not grow Portobello mushrooms in your backyard? Portobello mushrooms are one of the most popular ingredients used in many restaurants. You can sauté, grill or steam them. I love eating mushrooms because of their flavor and high nutritional value. Since I always buy mushrooms every time I do my weekly grocery, my neighbor suggested that I should probably try growing it in my backyard.…

The plate or bark is observed periodically for the sexual development i.e perfect state. Mating can be observed by seeing the dense filament growth surrounding the colony and is confimed by observing dikaryotic filaments, clamp connections, basidia and chain of basidiospore under light microscope as compatible mating type (Wicks BL et al, 1996; Halliday CL et al, 1999) or stereoscope Niko- SZ-PT (Ohkusu M et al, 2002).…

The fungi Alternaria is a phyto-pathogen cause leaf blight disease to variety of plants. Alternaria alternata and Alternaria helianthi was isolated from Dalbergia sissoo L. and Helianthus annuus L. respectively. Test antagonists grow faster than the pathogen and produced inhibition zones thereby limiting the growth of the pathogen. These antagonistic interactions influence the incidence and severity of the disease caused by the pathogen. When the two Alternaria spp. were tested by dual culture method in combination with T. koningiopsis, the result recorded found that A. helianthi (79.26 %) was most susceptible and revealed high percent of inhibition of mycelia growth while A. alternata (62.38%) showed lowest percent inhibition of mycelia growth.…

TOPIC: ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF FUNGI Before we discuss the economic importance of fungi let us have a brief study about what fungi really are. Fungi are multicellular, eukaryotic, non-chlorophyllous, living organisms which feed heterotrophically by absorption and have a cell wall made up of fungal cellulose and have a body made up of hyphae called mycelium. In this universe each and everything has its own economic advantages and disadvantages.…
