Island Of The Blue Dolphins

Decent Essays
Author’s Note Island of the Blue Dolphins has valuable lessons to learn and I have learned quite a bit from it, so should the readers of the book and this guide. In this book, Karana shows great character. The first thing that I learned was about having a good way of thinking. Having a “Glass half full” mindset gets you far in the real world. Working hard and having a positive attitude helps not only yourself, but those around you.
The second thing I learned is that you cannot quit doing the things you are determined to complete. If you struggle, try, try, try again. One of the last lessons I learned from the book is that you have to face your fears if you want to accomplish many things. Accomplishment does not come to you just like that.

Scott O’Dell: Intentional Misinterpretation or Accidental Appropriation? She braves the wrath of nature, fighting both the world around her and the world inside of her; her brother is eaten alive by dogs, her father is killed before her eyes; she has to make the choice of abandoning her tribe’s traditions and living, or keeping them and dying. In Scott O’Dell’s Island of the Blue Dolphins, Karana is the fictional representation of the Lone Woman, who spends roughly twenty years isolated on San Nicolas Island after her tribe’s massacre. Yet, as precise as his writing is to his research, the question arises of whether or not O’Dell’s writing is accurate to reality.…

In GPS 1010, I have learned that a person’s mindset is established in (1) a particular way of thinking; or (2) a person’s attitude and set of opinions about something. In addition to these items, one can either have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. These mindsets play a huge role in one’s success or failure. The mindset has “two meanings to ability, not one: a fixed ability that needs to be proven and a changeable ability that can be developed through learning” and repetition. To sum up, “the fixed mindset makes you concerned with how you’ll be judged; the growth mindset makes you concerned with improving.”…

In my speech, I will be describing the trials and triumphs of solitude, and the bittersweetness that come after. In both The Diary of Anne Frank and Island of the Blue Dolphins, there is a time of isolation with both times of optimism, and also pessimism. In both Island of the Blue Dolphins and The Diary of Anne Frank, the book starts off with an average girl of her time and place without anything to write a book about, but then their lives take a turn for the worst. In Island of the Blue Dolphins, Karana, the main character, loses her father in a unnecessary battle over otter pelts and what is a fair share.…
