The definition of “islamophobia” is a disliking of or being prejudice against Islam or Muslims, especially as a political force. Islamophobia has risen in the past few years tremendously, there are many hate crimes happening all over the world. Especially now it is growing with Donald Trump winning, his voters and supporters have already began terrorizing Muslims. It has been happening for many years now, there are so many crimes being committed but no one getting charged or punished for what they committed towards Muslims specifically. For instance, Itemid Almatar is suing the Chicago Police Department for attacking her at a bus station and pulling off her headscarf, known as the hijab. On July 4, 2015 Itemid was on her way home, and was running up the stairs to catch a train. She was in a hurry but then a group of police officers ran up behind her and tackled her on the stairs. They were very violent and on top of that pulled her hijab, veil, and all her clothing off of her infront of everyone. She felt violated and frightened, because she did nothing wrong. There is a video showing how they attacked her, multiple policemen tackling her and hurting her. According to the article “Chicago Police being sued for attacking Muslim …” by Abigail Hauslohner and Kristine Guerra, The Washington Post, Itemid was charged for “resisting arrest and was reckless”. Eventually in June all charges were dropped and she was found not guilty, but the six police officers never got charged for anything. Since then, Itemid has decided that she will be suing the Chicago police department for “the use of excessive force, false arrest, unlawful search, a violation of the freedom of religious expression as defined by the First and Fourth constitutional amendments, and malicious prosecution.” In the video “Hate is Rising” by Jorge Ramos, hit introduces a woman named Asma Jama.

Annotated bibliography St. Louis Protests: A Guide to the Police-Shooting Case This article goes into how another case of police shooting and how the police was acquitted with all murder charges. This case happened in 2011 but the case was just finished this past weekend, first this case was about a suspected drug dealer who was fatally shot, by the cop because the cop feared for his live and also said that he saw the suspect with a gun. Also it brings up a good question why was this former officer charged with first degree murder when they usually know it’s hard to convict a police man for first degree, at times it’s even better to charge them with manslaughter which is a lot better than charging an officer with murder. Another thing that this article mentions is that this drug deal started on foot but the suspect ended running back to his car which started a high speed chase, which the officer said I saw a gun, cops are trained to use force when they see a suspect with a gun or even if they believe it’s a gun they are likely to shoot.…

Ever since the attacks on 9/11, hate crimes have jumped by 21% (Villemez). Many angry Americans punished Muslims because of their religion, however, the Muslim religion does not teach any actions that relate to violence and injustice. The mistreatment of Muslims is only because Al-Qaeda claims to be Muslim. However, they are an Islamic based terrorist group, disobeying many rules and regulations of Islam. For example, Vanita Gupta, leader of the Justice Department’s Civil rights division, said, ““We saw it after 9/11, and we continue to see an uptick in allegations of hate-related incidents today following the tragic events over the past year,”(Villemez).…

While the police are being commended for keeping order and preventing violence in the streets, they are actually the ones taking it upon themselves to punish those who challenge them and the laws of the city. MLK provides the audience with many examples of police brutality in his paper. They allow their dogs to bite unarmed, non violent negroes. In the jails, they bully and curse old and young negroes and will refuse them food because they want to sing grace together (MLK 13). One of the traditions that everybody in the U.S shares is the practice of religion, I imagine a lot of people, even those on the side of the police, would feel that it is wrong to stop people from practicing their religion because it is one thing that everybody can agree is necessary in our lives.…

An Anthology that describes me is that, “I am a Muslim and I’m a kind, peaceful person.” One of the reasons that I chose this is because the stereotype that most Muslims are violent, exists around the world. However, this anthology describes me individually because I, like many individuals have my own personality and traits that are not derived by the stereotype of being a ‘muslim’. In the past, these stereotypes have led to people convicting me wrongfully of acts of criminal activities, I would never commit.…

Sometimes the tile of “police officer” is a contribution to victimization all by itself. When thinking about perceptions it occurred to me how many different ideas and types of people I know very little about however have strong opinions on. It is almost disturbing that we make so many conclusions without satisfactory information. Some of the theories that explain this explain that in ways it’s a self-serving necessity in social interactions, not intentional prejudices. However I don’t believe that lets us off the hook from continuously educating ourselves in order to form accurate perceptions of others. For a long time all I heard about Muslims was how violent and lacking in empathy they were so it had become impossible for me to see Muslims as anything else but bad guys.…
