Throughout the novel I had made sure that I left my mind opened to the unique teachings of Ishmael and while I was reading it I found out a few things …show more content…
I knew I was chosen by God to have this passion for the environment and this is the path he wants me to go down. But after reading this book my way of seeing how I am impacting the environment changed and I felt somewhat disheartened. All due to these two quotes. One read "And in spite of all the mastery we’ve attained, we don’t have enough mastery to stop devastating the world – or to repair the devastation we’ve already wrought." (p.82). This caused me to pause and really grasp what it was trying to tell me. What if everything we did for the environment was in vain? That did not sit well with me. The final quote the really impacted me was “The Takers accumulate knowledge about what works well for things. The Leavers accumulate knowledge about what works well for people.”(p.206.) I realized something after I reflected on this quote. Despite everything I believed I was doing right in taking care of the environment, my impact is still the same of a person, who doesn’t recycle or drives a hummer. That challenged the way I saw the world. It seems that the world is captivity by “mother culture” in a sense that relationship between humans and the world is like a dictatorship. Humanity above everything in the world has become a dictatorship and anything other than humanity is under them. They use the world’s resources and reproduce drastically without concern of the world. Also, Ishmael brought to my attention that humanity has in fact proclaimed that they are more evolutionarily advanced then species. They are not even entitled to for the communities’ law which has sustained life long before humans. This quotes just sums it up “That 's what 's been happening here for the past ten thousand years: You 've been doing what you d--- well please with the world. And of course you mean to go right on doing what you d--- well please with it, because the whole d--- thing belongs to you.” (p.61) Furthermore, evolution was conspired to humans to make them believe that after billions of years in the making of earth the last step was making man. “The universe went on as before, the planet went on as before. Man 's appearance caused no more stir than the appearance of jellyfish.” (p.58.) This belief of human supremacy has enabled humans to create a destructive behavior that is causing the planets ultimate destruction. I agree to some extent that humanity should revert some power
