He was granted an interview which did not go well. The interviewer did not grant admission to Columbia College, but he did suggest Seth Low Junior College, part of the large Columbia system. There Isaac could improve his chances for admission to Columbia College when he became a junior. However, Isaac knew he could not afford Seth Low and therefore would have to attend City College.
In the fall of 1935, Isaac began at City College. Three days into the semester, he received a letter from Seth Low asking why he had not registered. His father called the registrar's office and explained that they could not afford the tuition. The person at the other end offered a one-hundred-dollar scholarship and a job earning fifteen dollars a month. Isaac immediately switched schools.
Isaac wanted to make a better impression in college than he had in high school.Zoology became Isaac's major. In his first course, he had to dissect worms, frogs, and fish. Isaac then took his first chemistry course and loved it. The teacher was intriguing, and the lab work and demonstrations were challenging. Isaac found the work easy because during a high-school chemistry course, he had read chemistry texts from the public library. Embryology, another zoology course, did not go well.
