Why do parents spank their kids? In a recent poll by the Brookings Institute, more than seventy percent of parents believe, “It is sometimes necessary to discipline a child with a good, hard spanking.” Most of these parents were also spanked as children. Corporal punishment is a highly controversial topic and the negative effects need to come to light and be accepted.
Studies have shown corporal punishment causes cognitive impairments. A cognitive impairment is when a person has a difficult time concentrating, learning new things, trouble remembering, or making decisions which would affect their everyday life. Teicher and his team at Harvard Medical School completed a five-year study on corporal punishment on the brain, proving the negative effects it has on children. The American Academy of Pediatrics has defined corporal punishment as the striking of a child with an open hand on the buttocks or other areas with no intentions of causing physical injury. The study consisted of scanning the brains of forty-six mainly middle-class, well educated subjects, half not spanked, half spanked at least once a month continuously throughout several years of childhood. The findings were not just barely visible, they had shown through, showing a nineteen percent decrease in the gray matter of the brains of those who were exposed to corporal adjustment which is linked with impulse control, the ability to make the right decisions, learning, judgment, being able to adjust and change behavior, and to infer what other people are thinking and feeling. Corporal punishment is also associated with aggression, delinquency, low IQ, mental-health problems, and drug and alcohol abuse. Dr. Teicher believes parents tend to ignore the scientific facts which are proven because, “If I say that it was a bad thing that hurt me, and set me back towards adulthood, that will be genuinely upsetting and will cause me to look back and reframe how I view my childhood and parents.
