However I do agree with you that. Most clients do not want or look for pity regarding their situation. They are mostly well aware how they got into such circumstances but are looking for someone to hear them out and possible if their open for it, listen to suggestions and accept resources that are available to them.
The other day I watched a video named “Is empathy overrated” http://bcove.me/tngfzkic relates that empathy can actually have negative consequences while working with clients. Something to consider.
