The deep division in society over the appropriate limit is mirrored by censorship of material. Every state has a role in controlling the activities of the press within its jurisdiction. The control of information and ideas is what is called censorship. Media laws are necessary to an extent. The press can only perform its crucial role as a watchdog of government if there is some form of control to ensure discipline in the industry. The government regulates the media because of the public’s real need for standards in journalism. Many limitations are intended to help enhance ethics and quality of the press against other important values, like state security, social peace, and personal rights. The media, on the other hand, is also capable of exceeding its functions and going over and above its framework and that is where the government sees it important to control the information that the media disseminates to the public as some of the content could be detrimental to the public. In a world in which acts of violence, murder or crude and shocking behavior seems to be a normal occurrence, it may lead one to wonder what has put society onto this slope, and how this behavior came to be so acceptable. Regarding institutional censorship, in society there are various institutions that exist and co-relate with each other. These institutions are guided by the various codes of conduct and rules of behavior that will ensure that they maintain discipline. These codes of conduct usually prohibit certain behaviors or certain engagements that one can partake in. If you take the example of Advocates, they are governed by the advocates act in the administration of their duties. This is the same scenario in other professions and those codes of ethics that contain prohibitions in them are what are known as institutional censors. Moving to self-censorship, self censorship involves a range of different kind of censors acting for different kinds of reasons. They capture the idea of self restraint resulting in the suppression of personally held attitudes with the requirement to adhere to certain standards derived from a set of norms, moral considerations or decency. Self censorship is therefore taken to mean a situation whereby individuals take some idea or consideration to overrule other attitudes that they might have.
