Is Calcium A Metal Or Metalloid?

Improved Essays
Every element has its own symbol ,atomic number ,and atomic mass. The symbol is letters of the element, atomic number is the number of protons, and atomic mass is the mass of the element. The Symbol for Calcium is `Ca’ and the atomic number is 20, and the mass number is 40.078 u.
Family.
The periodic table is classified into groups and every group(row) has its own properties. Calcium is in group 2 ,and this is the second most reactive group of the periodic table. Each of the elements in group 2 has two electrons in their outer shell. “This group is called Alkaline Earth metals, they are called this because when they are mixed in solutions, they are likely to form solutions with a Ph greater than 7.”

Calcium is a metal. The properties of metals is that they are “good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable (they can be hammered into sheets) and ductile (they can be drawn into wire). Most of the metals are solids at room temperature, with a characteristic silvery shine.”
Physical Properties
Each element has physical and chemical properties. A physical property is any property any property you can see. For instance, some of Calcium physical properties are : “ color is Silvery-white metallic, Melting point is 851°C, Boiling point is 1482°C, and Phase is Solid”.
Chemical properties
When the Chemical Properties of an element change, the identity changes. The chemical properties for Calcium are: “isotopes:6 , Flammability: when heated in air or in oxygen it ignites, and Reactivity : with acids Highly reactive.”

Roles in the Human Body
Calcium is involved in almost everything in our body, It is very important and any lack of calcium in the body will result in huge problems. One of the plenty roles of Calcium is that that the “ body uses 99 percent of its calcium to keep your bones and teeth strong. The rest of the calcium in your body plays key roles in cell signaling, blood clotting, muscle contraction and nerve function. Cells use calcium to activate certain enzymes, transport ions across the cellular membrane, and send and receive neurotransmitters during communication with other cells” see figure

Assignment #2: The Replication of DNA in Escherichia Coli Due Date: Feb 8, 2016 at 9:00 AM CST 1a. A procedure in which a small amount of DNA material is immersed in concentrated solution, cesium chloride (CsCl), and soon after placed in centrifuge until the point where equilibrium is achieved is called density-gradient centrifugation. Contrasting techniques involving diffusion and sedimentation form a persisting CsCl concentration gradient. Furthermore, the concentration gradient and pressure of centrifugal force results in increased density.…

In this experiment, we are using Calcium, Aluminum, and Magnesium to test our theory about periodic trends. We put these 3 metals through different tests to show why elements in similar group and period react differently. The purpose for this lab is to test the idea of patterns in the periodic trend, and if elements in similar group or similar period react differently due to the trend that they follow. If two elements in the same group or family are to be tested, one of the element reactivity will be slightly different from the other. This is the work of the periodic trends, the characteristics of an element atom change because of the element locations on the periodic table.…

Materials. Numerous substances in the experiment were used. The most frequently used was the unknown due to the need to test its physical and chemical qualities. When a solution of the unknown was made, 1.000 g of the unknown and 1.0 mL of water was used to make it. To test for the possible ions, 1.0 mL of silver nitrate and 1.0 mL of nitric acid were used for the ion test.…

I would choose the food associated with label 2 more often. This is because it contains 15% of calcium and label 1 contains 0%. This indicates that this food product is more beneficial for the individual since it provides an important mineral. This allows bone health to be maintained and could reduce the risk of complications in the future (Smolin et al., 2015). Also, looking at the sodium content, it is much lower compared to label 1.…

One of these concepts is understanding physical and chemical properties. Physical properties are aspects that can be measured or observed and will not change over time. Chemical properties are only observed when the chemical identity of a substance changes. Examples of physical properties are weight, color, opacity, texture, scent, freezing point, boiling point, melting point, and density. Examples of chemical properties are flammability, reactivity, and ph.…

Calcium in the human body has role of preserving or storing calcium supply so as to meet the body metabolic processes in cases of calcium deficiency. In children calcium deficiency (lack of calcium) it may affect growth, delay the strengthening of the skeleton bones. In adults, lack of calcium causes deployment and weakening of bones and leads sooner or later to osteoporosis. When calcium is absorbed in the body it helps in the normal functioning of the heart, blood, nerves and muscles. When on does not take a calcium rich diet the body is forced to withdraw calcium from the bone bank (calcium in stored in the bones) for it to use in other parts of the body.…
