Irving Penn: A Formal Analysis

My first impression when I viewed Mouth (for L'Oréal), New York, by Irving Penn, was wow, it’s so beautiful and colorful. When you look at this picture, you see a person’s lips with several different lipstick colors on them. The subject of this painting is obviously the lipstick, the colors in the pictures are different shades of red, purple, pink and brown, they are the focus point. The lipstick makes texture on the lips, creating a beautiful three-dimensional effect. I see several lines in this picture, mostly curved lines, there are no definite lines and the forms I see are basically the lips, nose and lipstick. When I look at this picture, the things that I draw my eyes to are the different shades of lipstick on the lips. The color is so beautiful and eye catching, it’s difficult to not look at it. In this picture the contrast is very interesting, the whole picture is black and white, other than the lips, and they are extremely colorful and vibrant. As for rhythm, there is none. And for the emphasis, it is obviously the …show more content…
The message the artist is trying to convey is that everyone’s different and unique in their own way, they just have different ways of showing people that. When I look at this piece I feel happy because I see all the different colors stand out on a blank face, it’s showing me that this makeup is about more than making someone look pretty, it’s about making someone feel pretty. And that’s the most important thing to do, to feel pretty, because then you are confident, and being confident is the prettiest thing a girl can be.
In my opinion, this artwork reminds me of myself and how unique and different I am, it shows me that everyone has different ways of expressing themselves, and to never be ashamed of it. I believe the artist is trying to say that you can be unique in any way you

There is a thought bubble which reads “WHUT CHOO LOOKIN AT MOFO” which is something that would be stereotypically said by a person of colour in America. At face value this artwork is simply depicting a white lady and her thoughts but from a conceptual standpoint this artwork is deeply impactful. The fact that piper has depicted herself as a white woman but is having “black” thoughts comments on her internal and external conflicts as a mixed race woman in her context. The cross referencing of cultures in her artwork shows he way in which she is somewhat living with split personalities. Although Pipers artwork speaks more pointedly to white people, there is space for all races to learn and connect with the artwork.…

    Cameleon Interview

The first genre that I decided to include in my multi-genre project was an interview. The reason for this is because it would allow the audience, in this case Mr. Gilmer to have a better understanding of my knowledge on colorism in regards to Blacks. The reason for why I named the interview Cameleon is because it goes well with the idea of people accommodate their looks to correlate with their environment. In the interview,I first decided to describe my definition of colorism and state how it relates to the Mexican culture since at the beginning of the year I only knew how colorism affects latinos and hispanic. Later in the interview, I wrote of the connection that I thought Blacks had with colorism and to what level they were affected by it.…

I feel that this song speaks to me on a personal level. In the refrain, I think the 'wars' and the 'shadows' represent your inner demons, the thoughts that say that you aren't good enough or that no one will ever like you, which I've had to deal with many times before. The line, "… but I know we've made it this far…" reminds me that though I've struggled, I made it out alive. "I am not as fine as I seem," tells you that people can be dealing with something terrible, even if they seem happy, and I can relate to that; I've tried to be happy for the sake of other people before.…

Julia Alvarez writes “I Want to Be Miss America”, to open people’s eyes to how something as small as a beauty pageant makes a huge difference on a teenage girl’s self-esteem and childhood. Alvarez makes a strong argument using pathos and ethos to sate her claim. She claims that everyday teenagers are trying to mold themselves into what they see in pageants in order to feel beautiful and fit in. Constantly trying to fit into the American ideal of beauty creates low self-esteem in teenagers and makes them feel left out.…

    The Scream Poem Analysis

“The Scream” I really like this painting because somehow it involves mystery and insecurity and to my eyes, the rare views in it reflect a sense of how deep the feelings and thoughts of a person can be. In addition, the fact that the composition does not allow viewers to appreciate the face of the screaming person, is what has drawn me to it. Even though it seems to be that it was a lovely afternoon for everyone, it seems that it was not for the scared looking person. Although two boats are seen on the lake and two people walking very pleasingly behind, the scared looking person seems to be astonished and perhaps confused toward something. Hence, looking at this mysterious individual posing his hands on his face with his mouth open has given me the impression that he or she is appreciating something non real that no one else is able to notice; no one but him.…
