Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common gastrointestinal disorder in which may cause constipation, abdominal pain, and episodic diarrhea. There is no known cause for IBS, but it is commonly reduced by managing stress, exercising, sleeping regularly, and avoiding certain foods in your diet. IBS can be classified as a collection of symptoms that occur regularly for at least 6 months and have occurred at least 3 times a month in the past 3 months. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is always accompanied with pain or discomfort in the midsection. High-gas foods, foods high in gluten, and FODMAPS may be avoided to help lessen symptoms. Extra help may be needed in the form of medications and supplements. These may include fiber supplements, laxatives, antidiarrheal medications, tricyclic antidepressants, SSRI antidepressants, and pain medications. Medications specifically for Irritable Bowel Syndrome rather than its symptoms may include Alosetron, Eluxadoline, Rifaximin, Lubiprostone, and Linaclotide. A person with IBS would likely need to have a limited diet, eat at set times each day, take medications or supplements regularly, exercise daily, get enough sleep each night, and have periodic checkups for their IBS.
