But I don’t believe it’s that simple. There have been times that I spent almost as much on buying groceries (fresh produce and etc.) in a week as simply eating out every day, if not more. Although I’m aware it’s still a better deal to cook my own food from fresh ingredients, I wanted to find ways to reduce cost. Therefore last week I decided to visit the local farmer’s market in downtown Hamilton on 35 York Boulevard. I had heard about farmer’s markets from family and friends but never had any motivation to check it out myself since I usually go to the closest grocery store. To be fair, I’d been to a farmer’s market couple of times before back when I lived with my parents in Halifax in 2011. No wonder we choose the less time consuming route in getting food since they no longer cherish cooking and have appreciation for food the way our ancestors did. Visiting the local’s farmer’s market had an impact on my perception of healthy sustainable eating. I learned that by going to farmer’s markets instead of supermarkets I could not only nourish myself with healthy and fresh food, but support local farmers that are struggling to compete with the large agriculture companies and minimize my carbon footprint, which was one of my personal learning goals. My next challenge will be to sign up for weekly organic food delivery system to receive a basket full seasonal produce.
