Irregular Warfare

Irregular Warfare has existed for as long as there has been Traditional Warfare. There has always been a clear advantage when conducting this type of unorthodox warfare. With this knowledge the Islamic State Militants (commonly known as ISIS) has adopted Irregular Warfare tactics and activities, which has led to their rapid growth through the use of propaganda, successful subversive operations, and tactics that have placed their operatives on American soil.
ISIS has capitalized on the major political campaign failures of the American government over recent years. United States troops executed order to overthrow the Iraqi regime led by Saddam Hussein, and continued sustainment operations for a limited period of time due to the outcry of the American people to bring the troops home. This premature recall of troops from Iraqi in 2009 proved to be a large campaign flaw. Iraq had been liberated, yet their new government was poorly established and was very much in need of American support. When we did not provide this support the foot hold of freedom that was gained through years of war had all but vanished in a short period of time. ISIS used the recall of troops to their advantage,

There are ground troops and Special Forces in most areas of operation with ISIS but they are not actively engaged in force on force battle. These air strikes by American forces and recently French forces have had little to no effect on ISIS, because they are steadily adapting to the reality of enemy airpower and adjusting their tactics, techniques and procedures to negate or mitigate the effects. There has been no equitable damage known to be done to the force and by them blending into the population of the area and not being a uniformed force makes this a difficult task for any ground forces looking to take the fight to this dangerous

Although the United States made the decision to send troops back to Iraq to help the country and its soldiers, it is best that American troops be taken out of Iraq because they need to decrease their involvement in Iraq’s war, they have spent too much money on the war from 2003 to 2011 and helping Iraq to this day. Two of the bigger reasons why the United States needs to stop sending troops to Iraq are because terrorism in the US, both domestic and nondomestic, is rising dramatically. Not only has terrorism been more efficient in the US, but their national security has not been doing a well enough job to prevent terrorists from executing their…

The terrorist group known as ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq) was able to come into being due to the weakness of the surrounding Middle eastern countries along with U.S. hesitancy has created a group with violent plans to bring the world to islam, with fear tactics such as the Paris attacks. They have grown as a threat “as sophisticated and well funded as any group that we have seen” (Coll) “Frankly [it’s] embarrassing for the world’s superpower” says Juan Zarate of CBS Security Analyst “to say that’s where we are three plus almost four years after this conflict has begun” (Kaplan). For a while now, we have been conducting airstrikes on ISIS and have created programs to train Syrian rebels, but all of our mediocre attempts to help the situation have been “strikingly ineffective.” Unless we can produce a force that could combat the ever growing force of ISIS, the Syrian world will continue to be just as destructive to the world as…

The CIA estimated that Isis has some 20,000-30,000 thousand fighters and that number is constantly growing. The group uses military force to spread its powers into neighboring countries. Mostly functioning out of Iraq and Syria, Isis puts bordering countries such as Turkey and Lebanon in great danger. Members of the Iraqi military are constantly at battle with Isis members trying to regain land lost to Isis. I recently had an epiphany it happened within the last few years. I never realized how cruel the world is until I got into highschool. Everyone knows about the Columbine High School School Massacre in 1999. It was where 2 seniors of Columbine High School killed 12 students, one teacher, and also injured 21 other students. The boys planned the school shooting and ever since then people have tried to recreate the Columbine school shooting at other schools.…

The only way to defeat ISIS is a two-part solution: one being a short-term militaristic approach, and the other a long-term bottom-up approach; “two fundamental problems must be addressed concurrently; first, the effective control of violence […] and, second, the rebuilding of cooperative relationships […] to promote peace building” (Hansen, Ramsbotham and Woodhouse 2004, 10). A full scale attack on ISIS areas, both on the ground and in the air, will not only show ISIS that their behavior will not be tolerated, but it also will severely damage their operations and drive them underground. Properly training and funding the local forces, in some cases, could also be beneficial because it would allow the citizens to fight for their own cause. Although it could set a negative precedent, it would be beneficial if the UN could declare that ISIS speech is not considered free speech and that Internet providers should eliminate as much of it as possible. Spreading the awareness of the heinous actions of ISIS, especially from ISIS defectors, would help prevent ISIS from influencing homegrown terrorists by debunking their propaganda.…

and most Americans believe a war can be won by simply killing enemies off. As previously stated, this is not a normal war opponent, the best way to go about this war is to cut off what keeps them thriving: money. Isis has established a government, though it is not recognized, it is what has kept them striving as a religious leadership. The Isis government provides health care and small but needed necessities to live for the people who follow them. They receive these funds from the black market.…

The United States dropped a massive GBU-43 bomb, nicknamed the "mother of all bombs," in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday against a series of caves used by ISIS militants, the military said. The 9.8-tonne GBU-43 bomb was dropped from an MC-130 aircraft in the Achin district of Nangarhar province, close to the border with Pakistan, Pentagon spokesperson Adam Stump said. It was the first time the United States has used this size of conventional bomb in a conflict. U.S. President Donald Trump described the bombing as a "very successful mission.…

The US has many weapons that ISIS does not have. ISIS relies on ground attacks because they do not have airplanes, like the U.S. and other countries do. Recently, ISIS has began to use roadside chlorine gas bombs to spread panic. The U.N. Security Council has also approved a United States-drafted resolution that punishes the use of toxic chemicals, such as the chlorine bomb in Syria, while threatening enforced action of the military in the case of anymore violations (Thornhill, 2015). With any luck, the U.S. airpower will enable the different groups of people in the middle east to eliminate the immediate threat that ISIS causes and shorten the long term effects that they may cause.…

Unconventional Warfare (UW) is considered the trademark of the U.S. Army Special Forces (SF). In fact, UW often serves as the focus for training, planning, and discussion within every aspect of the SF community. Most debates involving UW turn into an analysis of defining Unconventional Warfare and trying to figure out how to fit current SF operations into that definition. Special Forces prides itself on owning UW and serving as the Department of Defense’s subject matter experts on operating by, with, and through an indigenous force. The debate over Special Force’s ownership of this domain should not rely solely on the training, funding, or even doctrine that validates UW as a SF core task.…
