In both stories, one character underestimates another character. In Bedtime Story the man underestimated his wife and his mistress, he didn’t think the women would be capable of planning his murder. While in Hide and Seek the kid underestimated his friends, he thought he was smarter than them by hiding inside the old refrigerator, but as we know he didn’t think his decision through.
In Equal Rites, the irony is that the priest who was going to officiate the marriage between the two men, was a woman. She had to challenge stereotypes within the church, since they’re vision is more patriarchal. It is ironic that she is judging them based on their sexual preference, since they are also challenging stereotypes, but instead of doing it within the church they are doing it within society.
