Title
What does war accomplish? Many people have asked this question, some writers have even tried to prove that war does not have positive outcomes. Stephen Crane, author of “War Is Kind,” was a reporter in the Spanish-American war, where 100,000 civilians died. This is just one of many wars that resulted in the death of thousands of soldiers and civilians. Wilfred Owen, author of “Dulce et Decorum Est,” fought in WWI. In addition to these authors there are Writers from more recent wars, such as Tim O’brien author of The Things They Carried, fought in the Vietnam War. Another author from a recent war is Kevin Powers, author of The Yellow Birds, who fought in Iraq. These writers use …show more content…
In stanza one of “War Is Kind” Crane states, “Do not weep. War is kind”(Crane). This is ironic because throughout the poem he describes soldiers deaths and the reaction from their loved ones. The contrast between these two parts of the poem show that Crane actually believes that war is is not kind. He uses irony to show how some people believe that war is glorious when in fact it is not. In addition, Owen uses irony to protest war in his poem “Dulce et Decorum Est.” Owen states, “His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin.”(Owen). This is ironic because it shows the horrors of a gas attack, which contrasts with the title that translates to “It is sweet and right.” The poem describes many terrifying experiences that contrast with the meaning of the title. Structure is used to add extra meaning or understanding to the words. In The Yellow Birds Powers states, “Or should I have told them I wanted to die”(Powers) This is written as a stream of consciousness, which means it was written as the writer thought. This is why the sentence begins with or and there is only one long sentence. Since the excerpt expresses a soldier’s thoughts it shows the reader how war affects a soldier mentally. Structure is also used to protest war in The Things They Carried which states, “Among the necessities or near-necessities were P-38 can openers, pocket knives…”(O’Brien). The use of lists shows a different perspective of the war. The lists of equipment and resources show how the soldiers were prepared for the grueling conditions, however, despite having large amounts of equipment and resources it was still not enough to keep many of them alive.
