The Historic Iron King
The Prescott area offers a diverse network of trails. Some of these trails can have treacherous hazards like large trees, sharp rocks and steep cliffs such as Smith Ravine trail number 297, Salida Gulch Trail number 95, and the Constellation Trail System. Whereas, some of them are flat maintained pathways of gravel like the historic Iron King Trail. The ground is usually saturated and the cool air smells like a mix of wet concrete and sand. That, however, is to be expected through this segment being that it’s a drainage basin. The pinion pine evergreens seem to grow out of the rock itself and the yucca plants and various cacti stand guard with their sharp spines. When the wildflowers, yucca, and various cacti are in bloom it makes the scenery even more picturesque. This is the part of the trail that bird watchers need to be alert as many types of birds can be

Fort Edward is a small village situated along the eastern banks of the Hudson River about fifty miles north of the city of Albany, New York State’s capital. People also sometimes refer to the areas as “The Great Carrying Place.” That name is derived from that fact that it is here, in Fort Edward, where waterfalls and rapids make navigation by water impossible and thus early travelers on the Hudson were compelled to carry their canoes from this region on the river and nearby waterways such as Lake George and Lake Champlain. Early inhabitants of the region included both the Mahican and the Mohawk people. The region now known as Fort Edward has historically been a transportation hub because of its location along the Hudson River waterway, which…

To the desert dweller, Cienega Creek is truly an oasis. Born in the Canelo Hills in eastern Santa Cruz County, the creek flows toward the northwest for almost 50 miles until it turns into Pantano Wash, which cuts through Tucson, eventually joining with the Rillito. It is one of the most intact riparian zones in the state. Although much of the creek’s flow is underground, shallow bedrock within the preserve pushes the water to the surface, producing a perennial flow that supports countless animal species and creates a green belt of vegetation that stands in stark relief to the surrounding desert. Here, life is abundant: insects buzz in the air, small fish flit in the water, and birds dart from tree to tree.…

A park in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, has a huge boulder field of musical rocks. Visitors to the park bring hammers, sticks, railroad spikes, and other odd things, to “play” the musical rocks. When tapped with a hammer, another rock, or other things, about one-third of the rocks in the field make a high-pitched melody that seems impossible to be ringing from a rock. At first, scientists thought it was strange that they never saw any wild animals in the boulder field.…
