Eye Contact
Eye contact in Iraq is a very interesting topic. It is okay if it’s just a little, but if you make too much, it may be considered rude or an indication of hostility. If men look women they don’t know in the eyes, it can be considered as flirting or harrassment.
Eye contact in the USA is extremely important. It shows a sign of respect and a sign of interest in what the person is talking about. Maintain good eye contact, but avoid staring, it is considered rude.
Gestures
Gestures in Iraq are sometimes much different than gestures in America. One gesture that is considered rude is pointing. Instead of using their index finger to point at someone, they use their whole hand to point. When they use two hands to point, it often means they’re angry. Another gesture they use is placing their right hand on their chest say, “thanks, but no thanks”. Another gesture that they have is when in America, we would wave, they just bring their right hand up to shoulder
